The Batman Adventures series (a tie-in comic to Batman: the Animated Series that actually outlasted the show and ran until 2004) was positively excellent. There were a couple of low points, sure, but it ran for twelve years so not everything was bound to be great (even then though, I think the bad issues often weren't so much as bad as they were just less good than the others). The characterization was great and I think it captured everything that's good about Batman as a hero and the villains also had some great storylines (the issue where Scarecrow returns to his life as a professor and genuinely seems to have reformed only to eventually fall off the wagon when he can't help but torture the man who date raped his favorite student was a bit heartbreaking for instance). It also managed to have serious storylines without falling into the trap of making things overly dark and gritty to the point of ridiculousness, which is something that a lot of Batman writers have trouble with
