Huge stretches of untamed wilderness

Whenever I visit Europe, this always hits me.

I mean, there's wilderness here and there but not at all to the same degree as in the USA

Eh, depends on where in Europe you're talking about. Even the wilderness you see in the U.S. isn't truly untamed. There's still areas of old growth forest, sure, but most of the forested areas you see have been cut for timber before and regrown, or have undergone selective cutting in the past.

Now that you say it, I felt something like that in New Zealand. It's an island nation, and a lot more densely packed than Australia, especially the North Island where I went.

I can say the same thing for Auckland and Wellington as cities - especially the latter. Wellington is a very densely packed city for someone used to Brisbane and Sydney. Auckland feels a bit less dense.
