They don't have that and that's weird

What are some things that are really common in your country (or even just your region)and that you are so used to that it's weird to imagine other countries don't have them?

Cupboards above sinks, where you put dishes to dry. Apparently other people dry their dishes by hand.

I have always used dish drainers. It just sits by the sink and you put dishes in it. The water flows back to the sink.

holy shit why don't we have that, that'd be brilliant!

tbf I air-dry my dishes on a rack in the other side of the sink. and if I had only a single-chamber sink I would have a rack on the counter. but that takes up so goddamn much room, I can see where over-the-sink shit would be highly convenient.

I've literally only seen one person ever have that.

It does some like a pretty efficient system, though.

Free museums and a free zoo

I live close to Washington DC, and all the Smithsonian museums and the zoo are open to the public for free. I always forget than in other parts of the country, and other countries, that stuff is expensive.

Being not from Washington DC, it is definitely kind of trippy to visit there and get to do all the free stuff.

I always think it's strange to imagine most countries having pretty strict speed limits on highways. It all seems so very slow...

Horrifyingly hot summers. It's always surprising for me to hear about people looking forward to summer. In Arizona, you just suffer through it and wait for the monsoon to come.

Huge stretches of untamed wilderness

Whenever I visit Europe, this always hits me.

I mean, there's wilderness here and there but not at all to the same degree as in the USA

Driving everywhere. I live ten miles out of town, and it's still actually in town. We have a weird, stretched city, though. But I can't just "go to the grocery store", because the nearest one is ten miles away. I'm hoping to get my stamina up so I can bike there, but I have to drive to do it now.

It's so weird to me that there are so many people who have never left their hometown, or who can take a day trip to another major city. I live next to a capital, but the next major city is two hundred miles away.

I really, really wish I could live in a city that's not too big, but still has pedestrian-accessible shopping areas.

Good public transportation systems. I'm always surprised when I visit other parts of my country and find out how difficult it is to get anywhere if you don't have a car because of barely functional or non-existent public transportation. Because I grew up in the Philippines and then have mostly lived in big cities in the US, it is weird when I go to places without buses.

Having peanuts/peanut butter in EVERYTHING!

I always get disappointed with European candies because they look so good but they always have hazelnuts in them. Not a fan of hazelnuts. I wish someone would bold and try peanuts instead.

Castles and castle ruins. Both towns I grew up in had castles (in various states of repair), and the river valleys and hilltops in historically contested areas around here are fairly lousy with them. I mean, they're often not impressive castles, most of them are just the remains of tower houses or Norman keeps, but they're plentiful. I find it weird to imagine countries where you can't spot mouldering grey towers peaking through trees on a regular basis.

Another one...

Using time as a measurement of distance.

Like this is a common conversation in the US;

PERSON ONE: I want to go to the library. How far is it from here?
PERSON TWO: Oh, it's about a ten minute drive.

And that is a perfectly sound conversation here. Not so in the rest of the world, where they actually want meters, kilometers and what not.

American biscuits, with gravy.

Oh, well, nothing to be done, really.

When I was in New Zealand last month there was a number of little things I kinda mildly missed, especially when I went to the supermarket to pick up a few things. The one I missed most however is Anticol, a brand on lozenges for colds that I like that is at the top ends of "lollies" and the bottom end of "medicated". I had to get Strepsils instead (a more medicated brand). (Yes, I got a cold while over there - putting myself on Strepsils, Sudafed and Berocca helped me get over it.)

But for the most part NZ is very like Australia with most differences being different brand names for essentially the same thing.

Grey squirrels, round doorknobs, drinking fountains, gallon jugs, spearmint (goddamn it I like peppermint, too, but that's for Christmas, the rest of the year, and particularly in my icecream, damnit, SPEARMINT); ice-cubes.
