Another one...

Using time as a measurement of distance.

Like this is a common conversation in the US;

PERSON ONE: I want to go to the library. How far is it from here?
PERSON TWO: Oh, it's about a ten minute drive.

And that is a perfectly sound conversation here. Not so in the rest of the world, where they actually want meters, kilometers and what not.

I don't know, here in Ireland time is pretty much the standard measurement too. Everything is 'ten minutes walk' or 'two hours drive' or 'four hours by bus with a stopover for half an hour in Waterford'. My nan's house is four hours away, my sister's college is eight, Dublin is an hour and a half minus traffic. I've no idea how far away any of those places is in miles.

And they end every set of directions with "but it would have been closer if it weren't for da English!"

... Not really. Mostly it's "It would have been quicker if the NRA hadn't made a complete hames of the bypass" or such like.

Yeah, IKR? It just doesn't work somewhere where, depending on time of the day and day of the week and time of the year, the same stretch of road can take you between 5 minutes to an hour to drive through.

Here, that would be nonsense, since the same driving distance can take from 15 minutes to two hours depending on the day, the hour, your choice of transportation and your luck.
