That is really interesting! I can't think of any holidays we have like that in the US. Most are because of events and such (4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc).

Finland industrialized super-late by European standards (mid-1800's when we were under Russian rule), which meant that the traditions stayed longer. A lot of it was lost when of course when the Swedish originally introduced Christianity (1400's), but there was a lot of resisting, so a lot of it survived as well. There was also a huge movement to gather and archive all Finnish traditions, because people wanted to create a common national identity under the Russian rule, which has resulted in one of the biggest folklore archives in the world, at least compared to the size of the country.

A lot of really old traditions in other countries were destroyed during the industrialization, and considering that US has people from various different countries of origin (who had come there at various points in time), I am not at all surprised that you don't have stuff like we do. Besides in Europe old folk-celebrations had been used to create national identities, which again, wouldn't work in the US, since the backgrounds of the people were so different, there was no common tradition, so the national identity had to created through events that had historical significance. It's a shame, holidays like these are super-fun. I am always saddened when people don't get to act as witches growing up (that's what we do during Easter!).

(I'm a folklorist, can you tell?)

Huh. During our Easter we hunt for eggs and eat chocolate! Though, I guess we have Halloween for dressing up like witches and such. I know Europe isn't as big on Halloween (or at least it isn't from what I've seen). Is Finland the same way?

During Easter, we gather willow's branches and decorate them with feathers and other colorful stuff. Then we go around our neighbors and ask if we may bless their house. We wave the branch and recite a spell. After that the willow's branch is given to the people and they give candy (or money) in exchange.

Finland is indeed not big on Halloween. I mean sure it has started to become a thing that stores sell Halloween-stuff and some people hold Halloween-parties since about late 90's, but there is no tradition. And we don't do trick or treating.
There used to be a holiday dedicated to the dead, that was held around the same time. It's traditions mostly involved making a meal similar to a funeral meal and making sure you didn't upset any of the dead relatives still hanging about, so it hasn't stayed to these days. Also because it's not all that much fun?
