He used to be in the L Ron Hubbard days, before Tom Cruise showed up at David Miscavige took over.

Nah, basically he used to be when he was the biggest star they had, but that's obviously Cruise now. And after Travolta's son died (pretty much BECAUSE of Scientology) he was fairly close to leaving, and the guys on top have been watching him like a hawk ever since because after how long he's been involved he could definitely spill enough secrets to bring the whole thing down

(All that stuff is pretty much public-record true, and this next bit is just speculation but it definitely makes sense - the word is that when he was thinking about leaving, the church started blackmailing him with the threat of outing him. They keep record of all their ~audits~ and every one of the most private secrets they're told, and they will use them later to keep people in line. You remember that one blurry photograph of Travolta kissing some dude on the steps of some airplane that hit the tabloids a few years ago? The rumour is the church leaked it as a threat to keep him in line. And whatever DID happen, it worked. When asked these days he says the CoS really helped him with his grief after the death of his son - which is FUCKED UP, because the church's hold on his family literally caused the death of his son. He had some kind of condition that was really prone to seizures, and so he was on anti-seizure meds, but Scientology is really, really, wildly, overly against medicine, especially for mental problems. They convinced the parents to take him off the meds, and he had a serious seizure and died. Travolta cannot possibly be that fucking stupid as to be unable to connect those dots, and still he defends the organization responsible. Whatever they have on him, it's big enough to make him never leave. I actually feel pretty bad for him too.)
