This has annoyed me for a long time!

Not just calling people by their eye colors but just... Intense description of the eyes, and like "she could see the pain in his eyes, swimming right below the surface"

ditto. I don't get the "eyes filled with emotion" thing at all. I see eyeballs.

It's embellishing, since there can be lots of signs on your face when your in pain, but "his eyes twitched in pain" doesn't sound nearly as emotional.
