Really? You don't know your mom's eye color?

I notice brown eyes because I find brown eyes attractive. Next, I notice striking eye colors like very light grey, blue or green on a darker skinned person. But, in between blues and greens I don't really notice at all.

I know what you mean OP. I think if you find a character attractive I think you are more likely to notice. Also some people have incredibly striking eyes, like John Barrowman does, but I really couldn't tell you the eye colours of any of the other actors in Dr Who or Torchwood, his just stand out.

I think I'm a lot more likely to know the eye color of characters in tv or movies since there are way more close-up shots in those than there are times irl when I get that close to someone. Plus it's socially acceptable to stare at the characters long enough to notice even if you're not someone who pays much attention to these things.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, how about characters with bizarre eyes, like Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Hatake Kakashi, Raistlin Majere, Ghost Rider, et cetera, et cetera...
I'm curious.

It's not really about the eyes. It's about lazy writers using epithets to make their prose more flowery because they're convinced flowery = better

Eyes are easy to use or differentiate people by, that's all

This has annoyed me for a long time!

Not just calling people by their eye colors but just... Intense description of the eyes, and like "she could see the pain in his eyes, swimming right below the surface"

how the fuck do you see that

I almost never notice eye color, in real life or in media. I might notice if someone is wearing particularly brightly colored contacts, or if a dark-skinned person has especially light-colored eyes. Even then it's iffy.

I tend to get lost if characters are referred to by their eye color.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't notice eyes very much in real life because I dodge the fuck out of eye contact. It took me forever to even notice I was doing that; it's very instinctual.

I'll notice eyes if they're striking/vividly coloured (y helo Cillian Murphy), especially if it's a close up shot (photo or movie or whatever), but since I don't like eye contact in person it's not so much 'not noticing' as 'I don't look there'.

Though I do know everyone in my family has different coloured eyes. Mine are green, my mom's are grey, my brother's are blue, and my dad's are brown. :D

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice because I like eyes. Brown, blue, green, hazel, all the shades in between.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In RL I don't usually notice eye colour either, unless the eyes really show up against their complexion, or if the colouring is (to me) unusual. I know what colour my sister's eyes are because she has central heterochromia - the irises are green around the pupil but fade to blue at the edges - and we were really jealous of her as kids. I remember one girl in my class very clearly because she had rust-coloured eyes, brown that was nearly red, and they were gorgeous. Other than that, though, I don't really notice, and I have next to no chance of noticing what colour eyes a character on screen has, not unless the camera is busy making pointed love to them or something. They're too small? If I'm writing fic where eye colour is important (which isn't often), I always end up having to look up what colour the actor's eyes are.

My mom has green eyes and my dad has blue.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My siblings and I have green or blue, half my nieces and nephews do too, the other half have brown eyes, like their other parents' eyes.

Elizabeth Taylor had really pretty eyes, and, yes, I would probably label them violet as people are wont to do. George Clooney has nice warm, laughing, brown eyes. Jensen Ackles and Ryan Kelley have pretty green eyes. Jaime Bamber has striking blue eyes. Rihanna's are an awesome hazel.

So, uh, some people do notice, yes.

One of the first things I tend to notice about someone is their eye-colour, it's just one of those things I take in.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd make the distinction not that I don't notice it, but that I don't think about it. Unless they're very striking in some way, I really don't care about it.

Of course some people do! Eyes can be quite the striking feature! (The man in this icon is the perfect example, even though you can't see his eyes here. This picture is a good one.)

For me, it depends on if we're talking RL or media. I'm more likely to notice someone's eye color in media because of all the close-ups. Plus, if you fancy someone enough you might be seeing lots of pictures of their face, so there's plenty of opportunity to notice that kind of thing.

IRL I'm less likely to notice because I get shy and have a hard time maintaining eye contact. I don't want to be rude and stare at someone for too long, so unless you have the most beautiful eyes ever I might not notice. (Again, not because I don't care, because I LOVE eyes, but...anxiety, yo.)

I notice eye color all the time - both in RL and media. Not usually to the degree of knowing the exact shade, but I can tell you the eye color of all my friends, family and many, many characters. In fact, it drives me nuts how often comics colorists get a character's eye color wrong.

PS: That doesn't make the "blue-eyed man" thing less ridiculous, though.

THANK YOU

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you mean. I don't get it. Eyes aren't noticeable, they're barely visible, and they don't flash or glint and you can't see someone's emotions just by looking at their eyes, which are fucking tiny and nobody notices them.

This bothered me so much about ten years ago that I wrote a short story called "Eyes Don't Change" about this girl with eyes that glowed brightly when she was emotional or something, and then she got her heart broken and it stopped forever, except in a few of the fourteen alternate endings. It was actually worse than it sounds. The whole thing still pisses me off though.

I know the eye color of my immediate family members as well as most people in my extended family.

Then again, I really like eyes, so I tend to notice stuff like that. XD

I don't always know someone's eye color if I haven't interacted with them on a personal level, unless it's really striking, so the epithets are kind of hit-or-miss (and more importantly, I think they sound really silly...).

Can't say I particularly notice people's eye colours. I guess unless I find your appearance uber interesting or you incredibly attractive they just don't register?

I tend to gloss over eye descriptions and promptly forget them later on.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably because the other person's eyes is where you're looking when you're engaging with them in some way, generally. Hence why there's a lot of focus on them.

I mean for me it's not so much an attractiveness thing as seeing the variety out there, given that, as an Asian, everyone in my family has brown eyes.

I'm so glad someone said this. I told someone that I didn't know the eye colors of any of my friends including my boyfriend of many years and they were incredulous. "Where do you look when you speak to them?", they asked, and I was like, what the frig does that matter? It annoyed me, so I'm glad someone has said this here.

I can't tell apart blue from gray; light hazel from brownish-green; light brown from hazel, etc., unless I'm standing very close to the person or it's a close-up in a movie or a cartoon, but I can tell a general color otherwise. (This person is light-eyed, this person has brown eyes, this person has green eyes, etc.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-22 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I rarely notice eye color, though perhaps that is because I don't make eye contact as much as you are supposed to. Also, many lighter eye colors tend to reflect what is around them, so if a blue-eyed person is wearing a green shirt, their eyes might look greener than usual. It is not always easy to tell what color a person's eyes are, even if you are looking at their eyes.

Yeah, I'm with the crowd who only notice eye colours on tv because of close ups. And even then I tend to forget them again. It used to drive my mother mad - when I was talking about someone she would always ask about their eye colour, and I always said "I don't know."
