Depends. Like any storyline in a franchise that gets reimagined through generations, it has had different takes by different writers.

If we're talking about The Animated Series, then the Joker/Harley relationship can only be described as fully consensual. If we're talking other iterations, then it gets a little more iffy.

Joker and Harley's relationship is SUPPOSED TO BE FUCKED UP. I mean this is a bad example, but what it comes down to is if they aren't giving off that very aura of "this is wrong" they aren't being written right.

I don't understand people who cheer Harley on yet act like her twisted and unhealthy relationship with the Joker is a surprise. I understand the desire to see her free of his influence but given that her relationship with Joker formed the basis of her character in the first place why are you surprised by stuff like this, again and again? It's not as if DC has EVER portrayed their relationship as truly loving.

Do you also blame DC when a real-life person in an abusive relationship keeps staying with their abuser?

It comes off the whole 'FLAWLESS QUEEN GODDESS' mentality girls/women take to their favorites, and after saying it so many times like a fucking mantra, it blows them out of their safe place when these characters act the way they were all along instead of conforming to a 'I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR!' set of headcanons.
