I can't even with this fandom because I really enjoy Piper and I don't think I've liked a character that the fandom hated so much. I'm in a constant state of "grin and bear it."

I find Piper boring AF, but I don't actually hate her.

Yeah I don't get why Piper has such intense hatred. For the most part she's just there, more or less trying to be nice and mostly just out of her element. Tbh if I went to prison, she's probably the one who I'd be most like. I get thinking she's boring compared to everyone else, but the hatred? idgi.

She's trying to be nice, but she's not a nice person and I really enjoy that. She's not as insidious as Vee, for example, she's no grand villain, and I love her for that sort of realness. She's selfish and manipulative and vindictive.

I love watching her for the similar reasons. The show is just brutally consistent about her severe character flaws as time goes on, while Piper herself swings back and forth between denial and gleeful dismissal and dramatic reactions when there, gasp, are consequences to her being an incredibly self-centered diva. It's amazing.

Her getting jaded as hell in s1 was good for me. Had the naivety and foot-in-mouth disease stuck, I don't think I would ever find her enjoyable or able to relate to.

Now Nicky on the other hand I couldn't stand until s2. I'm more of the "auuuugh you guys like something I don't like WHAT IS THIS" sort of grin bear.

I think both Alex and Piper get a lot of unfair hatred when you consider that NONE of the characters are supposed to be perfect (especially considering this show centers around a women's prison.)

And I say this as someone who can find Piper annoying, but she can also be funny and I find some of her stories interesting.

I really like Piper too! I didn't much in the first half of Season 1, where she was all self-absorbed drama that was meant to be relatable, but once the show established more of the ensemble and Piper got to have more of a character than "well-meaning scared white lady" I completely turned around and now she's one of my top 5 favourites (with Poussey, Taystee, Red and Crazy Eyes).
