I'm pretty sure Venkmann's only redeeming quality is supposed to be being a good talker. He's a creep, an ethical black hole, and, compared to Ray and Egon, not especially bright. I'd wager his feeling creepier now is not so much a 'social justice awareness' thing as a 'old enough to actually catch it' thing.

Venkmann was the "face" of the group. Egon is the brains, Ray is the emotional heart, the black dude is there in case anyone needs to die, and Venkmann is there to handle all the social interactions and business decisions.
