[Ghostbusters, Bill Murray]

I feel the same way about most 80s movies, most notably Overboard, which was a favorite of mine. I think it has less to do with social justice and activism sucking all the joy out of things that are "problematic" and more to do with call-out culture who will villify and shame you for liking anything problematic.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wish more people would read this article

http://www.socialjusticeleague.net/2011/09/how-to-be-a-fan-of-problematic-things/

I used to be one of those people who thought you were a horrible person if you found ANYTHING redeemable about shows with rape/misogyny/etc. That helped me come to terms with why it's OK to have guilty pleasures.

Revenge of the Nerds! Oh my Lord, it's so gross now. And I loved it back in the day. But soooooooo gross now, rapey and voyeur-y and disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
omg my mom loves "Overboard"! Such a sexist film.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill Murray is always creepy (and unfunny as hell). His characters being creepy just follow naturally.

Yes. Although, I like Ghostbusters still. But Murray is probably my least favorite part. And he is totally a creep in real life.

A lot of 80s movies in general bother me. That decade is weird. There's a lot of "no means yes" romances for instance. Or worse. Like Harrison Ford in Blade Runner.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, or rather his character, doesn't pretend to be sane and sound. He's canonically losing it, professionally and privately.

Perspectives change. No big deal. You probably see things differently than you did when you were younger. Seems normal.

I actually saw it for the first time earlier this year and yeah, he's a major creep. But I think that might have been the point -- they wanted him to be a bit of a creep by 80s standards so of course it's going to seem like crossing the line now. I don't think it's SJW-ey at all the recognize this, though an argument could be made that you shouldn't hold 80s characters to 2010s standards.

I remember when I rewatched a few years ago I noticed that too. I actually didn't remember his character at all until I did the rewatch. I mean, but you can still like a movie even if a character is creepy? I don't even think we were supposed to like him that much? At least, I never did.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It as the 1980's. Men didn't have to pretend they weren't scum.

Plus from what I hear, thats actually what Bill Murry was like IRL.

I thought he was a bit of a sleazeball vis-a-vis women even back in the 1990s, so you're not alone, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As I recall, he was less of a creep in the second movie, if that helps?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty sad that just noticing sexism in old movies is now apparently "sjw try to ruin everything!"

Anyways, I haven't watched GhostBusters in years lol I barley remember Murrey was even in it. Was he really that bad?

It is just a marker of social change. Think of it as a good thing, now we can document how far we've come. Sometimes you just got to take a production as being of its time, that is one of the few good reasons for reboots and remakes; that time has changed and while the actual underlying story is strong the scenery has gone stale.

I'm pretty sure Venkmann's only redeeming quality is supposed to be being a good talker. He's a creep, an ethical black hole, and, compared to Ray and Egon, not especially bright. I'd wager his feeling creepier now is not so much a 'social justice awareness' thing as a 'old enough to actually catch it' thing.

Oh man, you should read the the novel.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It was based on the screenplay. It's so much worse, the interactions with the college ESP "test subjects", the questions they asked the librarian, Venkman's thoughts, Louis, etc. Much younger me was taken aback. Actual movie Venkman was toned down.

Venkman was already carrying that syringe

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
he brought it with him to his date with Dana. Who brings a syringe full of sedative on a date? The answer just popped into your head.

I think it would be hilarious if the "reboot" turns into a trouser role which would highlight just how creepy he is.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes a difference, the sequel begins with Dana having long since broken up with Venkman because he was such a creep, and he spends the entire film being considerably less of a douche (especially since there's now a baby on the scene).

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I rewatched this recently too, for fic-writing purposes (the characters were watching it) and it bothered me so much that I made the MC comment about how gross it was.

I still like the main premise of the movie, but hot damn do I really have to tune out most of the Venkman stuff.
