No. Like it or not, it's a history of cultural attitudes and trying to white-wash over it and sanitize it for a generation isn't helpful. Remember where you come from, and all that.

I'm reminded of a blurb that was put in front of a popeye dvd, specifically one that had the old, really, reallly racist episodes made during WWII. Paraphrasing, it said "There's some pretty racist caricatures in here. It was wrong then and it's wrong today. But we also think it's a different kind of wrong to pretend it didn't happen, which doesn't make anything right. So if you click play, know what your going to get."

I remember being really impressed with that concept at the time as a teen.

No, fer chrissakes, it is what it is. Most people are capable of holding two thoughts in their heads at the same time.

Nope. I'm sure someone will come up with a service that does it, but frankly, if it offends you that much, stop watching the film.

Nah. People should (and mostly do) understand that such things are a product of their time, and IMO it's a good realization of how and why things have changed. If we tried to retcon everything to fit a modern sensibility, that would be exhausting.

I'm going to differ from everyone else and so no, because it wouldn't work. How can you cut out an attitude?

Cut out an unnecessary and excessively offensive scene, maybe. I don't think my copy of Doctor Doolittle lost anything from having the extra-super-obvious racist parts cut.

Everyone else said no. How does your comment differ from everyone else, who also said no?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for one thing they said they were differing from everyone else. No one else said that.

The difference is not whether they're saying no, but the reason why.

I don't think your opinion was all that different from everybody else's.

It's been done. Parts of Fantasia were removed for racism. I never found out until recently... I think most people these days have never even seen the original version.

No, because these moments can be teaching lessons on how NOT to be :)
