he brought it with him to his date with Dana. Who brings a syringe full of sedative on a date? The answer just popped into your head.

I thought he gave her pills? There's a bottle on the nightstand. (That's what happened in the novelization, though admittedly those can differ greatly from the actual film.) He might have found the tranqs in her apartment. Thorazine seems a bit heavy-duty, but possibly not if she went to a medical doctor or psychiatrist when she started hearing things in her apartment. It was a bit easier to get things like that in the 80s. Granted, CCs are what you use for injections and milligrams for pills, but as the film says, "you're a poor scientist, Dr. Venkman". Or whoever wrote the script didn't do their research.
