(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)Re: LF Steampunk and Cyberpunk stuff
(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)Well I just started Arcanum - https://www.gog.com/game/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura AND I WOULD HIGHLY REC THIS TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A STEAMPUNK GAME. The short of it there is an AIRSHIP CRASH and you wake up and some herpy friendly guy is all like wow you are totally the resurrected ancient savior y/y? YYYY????? (I'm not kidding, this is in the first five seconds of gameplay so it's not a spoiler.)
And then you're kinda like uh ok maybe not but how about we just try to find out more about what is going on because FOR SOME REASON people are killing me wtf WHY ASSHOLES. And then you explore the world, and holy shit, the world is great. I'm a long time CRPG player, and let me say this old buggy game beats the hell out of something like Pillars of Eternity which is a recent release just in terms of sheer storytelling and how information about the world is delivered. Is it gorgeous? It came out in 2001, what the hell do you think. But it feels REAL and alive so much more than modern games do.
There are tons of stores in game that sell things that would be realistic. Stores run by inventors. Gun makers. Tailors. Things a CITY would need. You may never patronize them, but they're there anyway. There are solid day / night cycles. Storekeepers will not buy your trash items (why would a herbalist want a mysterious sprocket? sell it to someone who can use it). The steam element is fantastically integrated as well. It addresses the steam / magic conflict really well. Steam is new but technology is ACCESSIBLE. Anyone can use it. Magic is powerful but it's limited. And you find out about the world organically through running around and just doing normal quests. NPCs don't MONOLOGUE HISTORIES at you. It's crazy fun.
Just remember if you try this make sure to install like the necessary patches to make sure it runs nicely on modern systems. http://www.gog.com/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/must_have_arcanum_fan_patches_widescreen_and_more/page1
ANOTHER ONE that is like POST APOCALYPTIC AWESOME CYBERPUNK ADVENTURE
well
an adventure game anyway
PRIMORDIA. http://www.gog.com/game/primordia MotherFUCK this game is good. This game has one of the best stories I have seen in any game ever. It's point and click. I WILL NOT SPOIL IT FOR YOU but the plot is really really fucking amazing good. It basically starts with YOU, a ROBOT, who WORSHIPS MAN THE CREATOR.
PS According to YOU THE ROBOT, man the creator is the PERFECT ROBOT who created robots in his image.
Yeah. There might've been a few things you're not all that aware of.
Anyway your ship broke and you need to go to the city to fix it. THEMES INCLUDE: Robots, Robots and sentience, free will, the nature of humanity, the problem of evil, choice, justice vs mercy.
The puzzles aren't overly difficult, the game is crazy fun, the voice acting is amazing, and honestly just play this game. It is crazy good. The art is also fantastic. Go to the page, look at the screen, it's gorgeous.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 08:52 am (UTC)(link)Also your points affect everything. Charisma affects the number of followers you can have (2 - 5), Willpower is important to a mage... it really does NOT give you much of a tutorial but then this game was made in the days of the paper manual. These days we have handy dandy forum posts and so on. If you try it though I hope you have fun with it! It is fun.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:37 am (UTC)(link)Re: LF Steampunk and Cyberpunk stuff
(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)Everything by William Gibson. The main trilogy is Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Movies:
Obvious choice is Blade Runner. Gibson went and saw it and almost felt like giving up on writing Neuromancer because the world they created was so similar to what he was doing.
Drive (the one with Ryan Gosling.) Technically not cyberpunk but it's got the same kinda atmosphere imo.
Alien/s gives me that vibe as well.
Music:
sooo much stuf... ummm, Com Truise, Lazerhawk, the soundtrack to Drive...

Re: Cultural difference fics
Stranger in a Strange Land http://archiveofourown.org/works/519242/chapters/917463 Kal-El of Krypton arrives on Earth as an adult. To the Justice League's surprise, Batman volunteers to introduce him to human ways. There's an immediate bond between the two me, but cultural differences and miscommunication complicate their relationship.
These are all Bilbo/Thorin and touch on differences at various levels.
Gardening http://archiveofourown.org/works/682108/chapters/1251387
Bilbo Baggins arrived home late one afternoon in the middle of the week and the entire west Farthing is still talking about it.
Poor Mister Baggins. He was doomed to be a nine-days wonder no matter what and is it any wonder after a year-long adventure? Even the Tooks haven’t the influence to hush that up, but Mad Baggins seems to have managed to silence every tongue in the Shire on that subject which would be awe-inspiring ...if not for the way he decided to go about it.
OR: That one where Middle Earth seems to be unclear about where baby Hobbits come from.
Coats and Customs 'verse http://archiveofourown.org/series/40129 In a universe where Smaug never came to Erebor, Thorin son of Thrain marries Bilbo Baggins of the Shire for political alliance. Herein are the tales of their marriage, and what came of it.
The Courting Habits of the Line of Durin http://archiveofourown.org/works/725630/chapters/1346510 Hobbits didn’t have such things as courting rituals – they were uncomplicated folk. They announced their affections with flowers or a cooked meal, a shared pipe or simply a kiss – and then there were meetings with both families and a date set for the wedding.
Dwarves, as he kept discovering, were a completely different kettle of fish.
A Hobbit in the Lonely Mountain http://archiveofourown.org/series/38795 All of the dwarves survive the Battle of the Five Armies and Bilbo comes back to the Lonely Mountain with a recently orphaned Frodo one year later. He and Thorin eventually marry, Bilbo becomes Consort Under the Mountain, and the Kingdom of Erebor slowly returns to its former glory under their leadership. Meanwhile, they've also got three nephews to contend with and a Company of dwarves who can't seem to keep their noses out of everybody else's business. Political intrigue, royal headaches, cabbage patches, and hilarity ensues...
I might have some Loki/Thor ones but I think you don't like Loki/Thor?
