Pretty sure that's how the Yeerks mate in Animorphs, if I understand what dispersal fertilization means in this context. There's not any porn of it though...

Well, that's how plant species mate ...essentially. Also, a large proportion of marine species. Release sperm/zygotes into the environment and hope a meets b (or some combination thereof).

That's what I took OP's secret to mean.

I'd like to see it applied to sentient, motile beings who just... I dunno, curl up together in a big pool of water and let the magic happen. It sounds ridiculously cute to me.

It sounds adorable to me too, but I'm slightly ashamed that my next two thoughts were a) orgies, and b) polyamorous societies based around the formation of (literal) gene pools.

orgies

That's pretty much how a bunch of marine organisms do it irl, so it seems like fair game if you wanted to work that into your hypothetical mating system.

Yeah, that's kind of the Yeerks in Animophs, except they die after mating. Three of them swim around and contribute their genetic materiel.

"The Gods Themselves" by Asimov was mentioned in the GC thread.

From Wiki:

"The inhabitants are divided into dominant "hard ones" and subject "soft ones". The latter have three sexes with fixed roles for each sex:

Rationals (or "lefts") are the logical and scientific sex; identified with masculine pronouns and producing a form of sperm. They have limited ability to pass through other bodies.
Emotionals (or "mids") are the intuitive sex; identified with the feminine pronouns and provide the energy needed for reproduction. Emotionals can pass freely in and out of solid material, including rock.
Parentals (or "rights") bear and raise the offspring, but are identified with masculine pronouns. Parentals have almost no ability to blend their bodies with others, except when helped by one or both of the other sexes.
All three 'genders' are embedded in sexual and social norms of expected and acceptable behavior. All three live by photosynthesis; whereas sexual intercourse is accomplished by bodily collapse into a single pool (known as 'melting'). Rationals and Parentals can do this independently; but in the presence of an Emotional, the "melt" becomes total, which causes orgasm but also results in unconsciousness and memory loss. Only during such a total "melt" can the Rational "impregnate" the Parental, with the Emotional providing the energy.

I find that interesting but also really... gender essentialist, to an extreme degree. I guess it was a different age...

Even after all these years, I still find Yeerks super creepy

They are creepy, but fascinating. I love reading Yeerk OC fics just to get more of the Yeerks.

I seem to remember that 3 Yeerks sort of merge together and explode into a million zygotes inside a Yeerk pool. It's been over a decade since I last read those books, though, so I may be wrong.
