I sort of agree, if only because the reason is this: certain tropes/kinks are extremely popular, and most media has characters that can be shoved into those trope or kink boxes by fans, regardless of how well those boxes fit the actual characters themselves.

Of course occasionally you might get an extremely popular trope that actually does perfectly fit two characters like they were tailor made for it, usually because they WERE, they were specifically written that way, and that's when you get the phenomenon of a canon pairing being one of the most popular in a fandom.
