That chest symbol! How do you even see a crescent moon at midnight?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Check the calendar for moon phases, select the crescent phase (currently: waxing gibbous) then get your watch out. When it is midnight. Look up. Crescent moon at midnight.

You misunderstand me. I'm not using "crescent" in the archaic sense of "waxing." In modern English, a crescent is "less than half lit." By definition, a crescent moon is below the horizon at midnight.

It depends where you live.

So he's from the Arctic Circle? I hadn't thought of that.

I have no idea what any of this is, but if it wasn't for the mask thing in that first pic, I'd think he had a tongue all the way inside his ear, and it's kinda making me want to squirm away from an imaginary tongue. Blegh...

Apollo and Midnighter, from Wildstorm superhero teams Stormwatch and the Authority.

Apollo (with the bare head) is sort of like Superman with a battery that runs down quicker; Midnighter (with the cowl) is a super-intelligent, super-tough hand-to-hand fighter. They're sometimes called "gay Superman" and "gay Batman."

ETA: And they are (or used to be, anyway) a couple.

Oh, cool. Not so much on the "used to be", but still. Gay superhero couples make me happy.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They were married and had a kid together, even.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I hate identity concealing costumes. In the end, they all just look the same. Like here. Somebody gave Batman spikes on his head and changed his symbol. Yawn.

He's supposed to look like Batman, though.

So what are the names of the good comics?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Midnighter & Apollo were introduced in Warren Ellis' Stormwatch, but only in one issue. And then they became main characters in The Authority, also by Warren Ellis. Both comics were published by Wildstorm. Ellis' run on The Authority is really worth reading, after that, it gets hit or miss. It's ultra violent though, so read only if you have the stomach for it!

The picture below is from DC's Stormwatch reboot, which is ... very much its own thing. XD

The Apollo and Midnighter have been awful ever since Ellis left Stormwatch. That assclown Millar wrote them so abominably I still have a bad taste in my mouth all these years later.

"Midnighter, take out those guards!"

"Sure thing! I'm gay!"

"Apollo, get that sniper!"

"Will do, but first let me comment that he has a nice ass, because I'm gay!"

"Say, sweetie-bunch, as two homosexual gay dudes who like having gay man-on-man sex with each other and with gay homos in general, do you want to get gay married and then have some gay married sex and then make gay breakfast?"

Seriously, that's how Millar wrote them. He even casually mentioned that Midnighter had gotten AIDS at some point since gaining his powers, because of course he had. Just fucking awful.

To be generous to Millar, he may have been overcorrecting in response to how underplayed their sexuality was under the previous team. I think 2/3 of the Ellis/Hitch issues didn't even indicate that Apollo and Midnighter were in a relationship. I forget how far in I was before I realised that my Apollo/Jenny ship was so doomed.

Sadly, Millar is a) a giant shit-covered troll, and b) really not prone to subtlety.

I kinda wanna read it (since I loved "The Authority" so much) but everything I hear about it makes it sound terrible.
