Completely unrelated, but this secretly made me realise that Uhura was given the job in TOS that was closest to a receptionist.

Lol the 60s.

Huh?

As far as I know, if their workplace comes under attack and a receptionist's electronics are damaged, they aren't going to be the one fixing it.

That is true. (Star Trek was progressive for it's time, but it's not by today's standards.) But why did this secret make you realize that?

Just made me think about Uhura's job/ utility in the Star Trek team + sexism/ stereotypical women's careers. Idle musing, you know.

She did a lot more than that though.

Remember Mirror, Mirror? Or I, Mudd? Those were both episodes where Uhura played a central role and got to show off her acting and fighting skills.

I'm saying that out of all the jobs on The Enterprise filled by a main character, Uhura's is the closest to a receptionist sspecifically i.e. Comms is closer than being a Captain/ Scientist/ Pilot/ Engineer/ Doctor etc.

Which is different from saying that a receptionist is the closest real world job to Uhura's Comms position. That would be ludicrous.

Well, yeah.

She was the communications officer. Sort of like a telephone operator, who screened and routed information.

It was a job a woman "could do" in the 1960's, but not an unimportant one. I suspect Gene wrote "feminine" roles for Nichelle and Majel (who played the nurse) after network pushback against the pilot where Majel played a Spock-like First Officer.

Thank you for articulating what I wanted to say but couldn't because I only just made the connection myself. Doesn't mean the roles are important/essential.
