What is the stupidest medical mistake you've seen on television?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-27 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm inspired by secret 9.

If you talk about House, you're cheating!

Hoisting someone into one's arms and carrying them bridal-style after they've been injured in a way that could have caused spinal damage.

If the Die Hard movies count when they're on television, then all of the Die Hard movies.

Okay, out of just the Die Hard movies, what's the stupidest medical bit?

Re: What is the stupidest medical mistake you've seen on television?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-06-27 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Any time someone jumps off of something more than a few feet high, lands on the roof of a car, and is totally fine.

I mean, this could be said of many movies, but I feel it's most egregious in the Die Hard series.

If you mean dumb depictions of medical treatment then that's a whole 'nother ball game.

Jumping on cars from a building is taught in Chinese schools and is mandatory before joining the university of your choice.

LMAO, this sounds like Divergent! What's that group again? Oh yeah, Dauntless. (Had to Google it.)

The difference between Chan and Die Hard is that Jackie physically climbs down things or tends to fall onto something that would realistically break his fall.

And there's no mistakes about that, because for most of his films he is literally doing all of those stunts by himself. He is actually falling onto that thing. If he doesn't do it properly and safely he gets hurt.

With Bruce Willis it's just leap off a building through a window, patch in an explosion behind him, have him "land" on the hood of a car because that'll totally break his fall. And then he's fine ten seconds later.

Uh yeah, I know he does all of his stunts.

Then the difference should have been pretty fucking obvious to begin with.

Wow, why are you so touchy about this?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-28 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
you're the one biting everyone's heads off in your replies though?

Maybe he's touchy because you completely dismissed a thoughtful explanation of why it's different by latching onto a single detail and responding with the verbal equivalent of an eyeroll?

Not on television but in a manga: Afterschool Nightmare.
What do you mean "Mashiro has XY chromosomes on their upper body and XX chromosomes on their lower body"? OK that makes them a genetic chimera but also a biological girl. Baby is born with a vagina, child has functional ovaries that take over at puberty and teenager doesn't keep their flat "male" chest long once the hormones start pumping, end of story. There is no single reason not to have assigned them female at birth and to try and raise them as a boy instead. Unless their parents only wanted a boy, were fucked up in the head and tried to have her replace her dead brother, but the birth certificate would still list Mashiro as female and nothing would ever hint at the intersex thing, period.
And no, the fact that the world this mistake happened was a dreamscape does not make it OK in any way at all.

Saw Steve McGarret of 'Hawaii Five-Oh' get stabbed in the gut. He's transported to a hospital via ambulance, but midway there, leaps from the ambulance and then proceeds to run around, leap from a dock to a boat (landing belly down) and get the bad guy. So wrong.

Also - any character who is unconscious for more than a few minutes, or who has had surgery, or who has been 'in a coma' and wakes up with *no* IV and no catheter. OMFG.

Nothing specific, but I hate it when births are depicted as really clean and tidy. I don't care if they're easy, but there will be fluids and the baby will be covered in gunk. I don't expect TV to actually show me fluids, but I remember seeing an episode of Monarch of the Glen on PBS once when they're like "You'll just give birth right here in this room in the castle on a bean bag" and I'm like "Roll up the rug first!"

Dunno if it's a 'mistake' per se since it's on the patient not the doctor, but any time someone rips an IV out of their arm. NOOOOOOOOOO!

In general, the idiocy of drugs. Ie: Give me 5ml of benzodiazepine stat!

BENZODIAZEPINE IS A CLASS OF MEDICATION. IT IS NOT A DRUG DAMMIT.

Specifically, in Sugata Sanshiro, when it's very heavily implied the girl is suffering from tuberculosis but they say she was born with it, which is impossible unless her mother had TB while she was pregnant, and then, still very very rare, but also because if she had been born with it in that time period, she would have died from lack of treatment.

This one is so ubiquitous, and was mentioned in secret 9, but I hate it when shows shock a flatline. You only shock V-fib. But it is dramatic, so they do it, and I cringe each time.
