no no no no no, stop. don't be creepy about hockey players, they don't fucking deserve RPF.

why?

really late, but

short answer: they're real people, usually with wives and kids and stuff?

the only reasonable excuse i can think of for RPF (in general) is when a celebrity has an established public image, so people can ship that persona they're mostly faking anyway, right?

but hockey players don't have that kind of thing, they're totally normal guys who just want to play sports and only do interviews because they have to (and it's not like you'd really know how someone is from cliché hockey answers).

also, it feels fucked up to write or read fic about people i've actually met/grown up with (or any of their friends).

hockey players also have established public images - sidney crosby in particular has has extensive media training, so why should this be any different than other RPF besides the fact that you know some hockey players? short answer: it's not.

yeah, crosby's been the face of the NHL for years now, but i don't necessarily think media training and a public image are the same thing. for example, pop idols or old historical figures definitely have established images. the entire point of an idol is to sell a very fake version of themselves, and historical figures have been in so much fiction that it's easy to think of it as shipping those fictional versions of themselves than actual dead people.

that's all incredibly different from knowing to say, "it was a good game, the other team played well, we'll keep on playing our best" in interviews. most players really are just being themselves.

i mean, i think all rpf is creepy and intrusive, but shipping athletes comes across as the worst kind.

If it's any comfort, almost all of the Hockey RPF I've seen on AO3 is locked to the site, so it seems to be a pretty tight-knit and tactful fandom when it comes to their RPF.
