Re: Am I just doing this really wrong?

Maybe not. I loved Buffy as a kid, tried to rewatch it a couple years ago, and the first season did not age well for me...still fun in some ways, but like you said, the pacing, oh Jesus Christ the pacing. I haven't tried S2 yet, so my memory could be just as wrong about it as about S1, but the script gets flipped pretty hard - particularly in regards to Buffy and Angel's bland romance - in the episodes right after the one you're watching now. The show gains more focus, gets darker, and starts putting out the stuff that made it a classic. So I feel like you could use the next few episodes as a decent gauge: if you're still bored after them, then give up and move on, because I remember much of the second half of S2 being one of the pinnacles of the show.

Angel's show, on the other hand, I found to be a lot stronger in the early seasons, and it held up to (several) rewatches much better. It's more adult, especially in regards to Angel (who is much easier to like when not seen through the lens of teen romance).

As another anon who's been sort of slowly nosing along through Buffy and Angel (obviously farther along than OP - about through seasons 4 & 1) I definitely agree on Angel so far. It's great and I love it.

But Buffy is just... weird. Because it feels like for every step they take that I like, they take one step back. I can't even put my finger on it, there's just something weird and off about it. There's just also always enough to get me to come back and give it another try.

That sorta describes about how I felt about S1. Every great episode or great moment was knocked off kilter by randomness. Like the amazingly intense episode with two main characters possessed by lost spirits playing out a tragedy immediately followed by lol fishmen. Jarring.
