As another anon who's been sort of slowly nosing along through Buffy and Angel (obviously farther along than OP - about through seasons 4 & 1) I definitely agree on Angel so far. It's great and I love it.

But Buffy is just... weird. Because it feels like for every step they take that I like, they take one step back. I can't even put my finger on it, there's just something weird and off about it. There's just also always enough to get me to come back and give it another try.

That sorta describes about how I felt about S1. Every great episode or great moment was knocked off kilter by randomness. Like the amazingly intense episode with two main characters possessed by lost spirits playing out a tragedy immediately followed by lol fishmen. Jarring.
