In what ways have you won the genetic lottery?
In what ways have you lost it?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: I feel like I have a pretty good head on my shoulders.
Lost: Cancer, Obesity, Diabetes, Attractiveness

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, cancer and dementia run rampant, so I figure if neither are cured by the time I'm elderly...

I won by being the only other person in my family by not getting wisdom teeth.

I lost in pretty much every other aspect, especially given one of my parents was adopted and the other had a biological parent that abandoned them before they were born, so no one in my family has any clue about genetic health conditions that we may have inherited.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: no mental illnesses, other serious conditions or diseases, smarter than average, great teeth, hearing and eyesight, thin body type.

Lost: hair could be better, I guess, but even that is just me trying to come up with something negative.

Diabetes on my dad's side of the family. Kind of have to be careful, but hard to do when you're poor and don't have access to kitchen essentials like an oven or stove.

My hearing loss is also attributable to my dad's side of the family.

As far as won... my mom's side of the family is pretty hardy and big, so that's probably why I'm healthier than I should be.

Won: Not too many genetic illnesses (all the cancer in my family was smokers), smarts,
Lost: two relatives who had Alzheimer's, bad eyes from both my parents, mental illness

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: Good immune system, not ugly
Lost: Depression, nearsightedness, rare a condition involving cholesterol production that's most likely unavoidably going to give me a heart attack if I did in fact inherit it
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-06-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: Intelligent, good hair? Stealing from above anon, good immune system (at least compared to be siblings).
Lost: Rampant and severe depression and anxiety, addiction, breast cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol, terrible eyesight, and I sunburn like nobody's business.
Edited 2015-06-30 23:02 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: I was born to incredibly hard working parents and though we may have struggled when I was growing up, we're now 1%-ers in the USA. I am also white-passing and healthy.

Lost: My eyesight is absolute shit. Ugly. History of reproductive issues (endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, etc.) although it hasn't hurt my family's fertility. Underbite.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: I'm white, physically abled, pretty smart, blue-eyed, and have no allergies other than possibly penicillin.

Lost: I'm mentally disabled, physically female (I'd give anything to not have periods), and a tendency toward dementia on my mother's side.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: Good hair, good teeth, a general good mix of genetics so I'm fairly pretty, above average intelligence, height. Unless taken by cancer or any of the other bad things, longevity.

Lost: From my father's side: Cancer, heart disease, depression, bad eyesight
From my mother's side: Some alcoholism, hair goes grey early

Only been affected by the depression of the bad so far, and hope to keep it that way.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: nice eyes, intelligence
Lost: really bad eyesight, crooked teeth, high cholesterol
ibbity: (Default)

[personal profile] ibbity 2015-06-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: Pretty hands, big tits, great hair, good facial structure, excellent general health

Lost: Nearsighted, hypermobility which sometimes causes join pain/stiffness (especially in winter), hairy af below the waist, depressive tendencies (spent several years SEVERELY depressed) also I sweat like a mofo all the time for no reason
Edited 2015-06-30 23:20 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Won: white, good eyesight, no chronic illnesses, no serious allergies, good immune system, good teeth (in the sense that I rarely get cavities and have no other non-aesthetic problems with them), normal amount of body hair, nice facial features, a somewhat hourglass-y shape. If I take after my dad's side of the family I'll probably live a long time and seem younger than I really am.

Lost: depressed, tendency to be overweight, saggy boobs (they've always been saggy, it's not due to age), not-great hearing, big feet, and I sunburn easily.

Won: Enough beauty to be happy with myself, enough brains to know how to use google to fill in the gaps, and financial management ability (I save 45-50% of my monthly income and put it towards retirement). And a great figure. Thanks for the killer bod, Gran-gran.

Lost: clinical depression, hypotension, kyphosis, addictive personality, crooked teeth, small boobs. Thanks for the small boobs, Gran-gran. Also, obesity and heart problems run in both sides of my family, so that's something I have to watch out for. And bad eyesight.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lost: really ugly, fucking bonkers, lot of health problems, female
Won: white, and that's it.

P.S. I'm also an atheist who hates kids but that's not genetic

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Won: I have the body type the media tells us is perfect. I'm a size 2 with and hourglass figure and C cups, and that's not even trying to be fit (and I'm over 30). Two grandmothers (great and great great) on my mom's side lived to be over 100, and the other to 96.

Lost: Tiny, tiny mouth, way too many big teeth. Horrible nose. Extremely wide feet (shoes are a nightmare). Heart disease and high blood pressure on my grandpa's side.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Default)

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2015-07-01 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Win: I'm reasonably intelligent, and not totally ugly.

Lose: Fat, I wear glasses (everyone in my family does, though Dad has only taken to reading glasses due to age), mild depression (Mum has depression), Aspergers (don't know if that's genetic), likely to get diabetes at some point (Mum has it, her father had it).

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Won: My grandparents have all lived into their 90's and were all generally healthy.
Lost: My Dad's fragile genes combined with stressful family life = weak constitution, poorly functioning gut, psychosomatic stuff that sort of thing. It is currently winning right now. :( Trying to rest so that I can do stuff again.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Won: good teeth, reasonable intelligence, no early-onset chronic illnesses, a whole lot of nonagenarians and even a couple of centenarians on my dad's side. And I don't have any ancestors from The Bad Village. (My father's extended family intermarried extensively with another extended family from a village near their own. A scary number of my dad's Bournias cousins have developed Alzheimer's at a young age.)

Lost: Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and dementia on my mom's side.

won: looks.

lost: health.

There's no upside to this. People are really creepy and gross.
dahli: winnar @ lj (Default)

[personal profile] dahli 2015-07-01 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Won: looks.

Lost: I'm a nervous wreck. Also A.D.D. and low blood pressure.
Edited 2015-07-01 04:30 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly lost: Tendency to gain a lot of weight easily (while my brother can eat what he wants and never gain weight), acne and short stubby fingers, some eye problems, there's cancer and diabetes on my father's side of the family and cancer and depression on my mother's.
The only way I won it is with my teeth - I have pretty sturdy teeth and never had problems with them so far.
