Old Fandom

What fandom are you really into where the media came out before you were born? (But not something where new iterations are being made - so not Lord of the Rings because Hobbit just came out).

How did you come upon this media?

What if you like Lord of the Rings but aren't really interested in the movies

It's not really what I'm going for here. I'm interested in fandoms that are unusual to find. The Hobbit movies bring attention to Tolkien's Middle-earth and increases fans for the original LOTR films, which increase attention for Tolkien's works, etc. And Tolkien generally has new content all the time (games, movies, new books like CoH, etc.).

But if you like Quincy ME, how did you end up liking that?

The Bible. I can't remember how I got into it, but I'm pretty sure that it started as a joke. I honestly can't tell if I'm joking anymore (my otp is Jesus/Satan btw. It works for me on a lot of levels)

What about the Silmarillion? Nothing new there and there is almost certainly never going to be a movie.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Hmmm. Does Dune count?

I agree with the Silmarillion, though I had a major upswing in my fangirling due to the LotR/Hobbit movies.

Nothing really? Starsky and Hutch, The A-Team and Star Treak all have newer movies. (Though I got into S&H and The A-Team separate from their movies.)

Lawrence of Arabia -- watched it on a lark since it was free on Amazon Prime

Star Trek TOS -- same as above

Star Wars The Original Trilogy -- wanted to see what all the fuss was about when the prequels were coming out

Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn -- independent reading for English class. I could choose what to read and fell in love with these

Since the new movie hasn't come out yet, Man from UNCLE. I got into this because it was my mom's favorite show and I was curious what it was like. (Ditto for Wild Wild West, though it had a movie.)

Certain people from around the 20s/30s. Not really media (though they created some, mostly not that well remembered and far too expensive on Amazon), but whatever. They seem to have fans.

I was really into He-Man and She-Ra for a couple years (back when the 2002 remake cartoon was airing), but most of the output that was there was more for the 80's cartoon than anything else. It was alright stuff, though I don't remember a whole lot of what was around. (Also, I was born in the late 80's and a few years after MOTU/POP were a thing, so I think this counts?)

I honestly can't think of a fandom that pre-dates me, unless we go back to ACD (does he count?) or Jane Austen.

I was born in 1961 for anyone wondering. :-)

I know there's a sequel coming out, but it's not out yet, so Blade Runner. I'm not sure how I came upon it; back in my early internaut days it was just one of those things that got listed a lot with other vintage sci-fi. I remember I rented it with my dad once and I liked it but it was bright and sunny outside and my dad is a moron who never shuts up so I couldn't really enjoy the movie like you're supposed to.

Years later I was in college and ended up having to watch the movie for a film class. That sorta kickstarted a minor obsession with the film that only grew intensity as time went by. It ended up converging with my changing music tastes and what draws my eye aesthetically (I love night photography, neon lights, organic architecture, etc.) and it's pretty much my favorite movie at this point. But so few people my age have seen it now, and even fewer actually like it. :(

Star Wars is the first one that came to mind since I used to watch the heck out of those videos as a kid. I genuinely loved all of it.

I guess the other one would be the Alien movies, or at least the first Alien. I was born the same year Aliens came out though. Loved both and kind of shipped Hicks with Ripley.
