Re: Unpopular Opinions Thread
Just, the second oath he forced on his sons, having himself realizing that beating Morgoth was literally impossible, just says it all about who he was.
I'm all for liking characters who do horrible things. But in my mind he's irredeemable and I struggle to see any positive traits.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 01:40 am (UTC)(link)Though I read it differently because his sons were definitely adults at the time, and were just as into taking the oath so I can't see that as them being coerced.
Re: Unpopular Opinions Thread
I do think he may have been a good mentor in smithing for Curufin, because Curufin is the son who had both his mothername and fathername indicating he was Fëanor's Mini Me.
Re: Unpopular Opinions Thread
(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 03:38 am (UTC)(link)I just think he was so wrapped up in himself that he didn't really see his children or their needs. He would use them to further his own ends, and I'm sure he was delighted when they connected with his own passions. He would even be delighted in Maglor being praised for being such a renowned musician, even if he might not appreciate it for himself.
He must've done something to engender his sons' deep love and loyalty, but I agree that it is hard to see him as a loving father. I do think that Nerdanel's influence may have been heaviest in this area, making sure he paid attention when he otherwise might not have.
