This seems unpopular only in the Tumblr Tolkien fandom, but I don't think Feanor was a good father. Nothing in his personality strikes me as someone who would have wanted to spend lots of time with his kids or be super nurturing. The art of Feanor holding Maedhros or the headcanons about him being an awesome grandfather to Celebrimbor are cute, but I don't think they fit with how I see the character.

Just, the second oath he forced on his sons, having himself realizing that beating Morgoth was literally impossible, just says it all about who he was.

I'm all for liking characters who do horrible things. But in my mind he's irredeemable and I struggle to see any positive traits.

I don't think that's generally unpopular? Opinions on him are always split but I see tons of abusive dad Feanor stuff.

Though I read it differently because his sons were definitely adults at the time, and were just as into taking the oath so I can't see that as them being coerced.

I don't think he was a terrible father, but I do imagine him as too passionate and too obsessive to be an absolutely perfect one.

I do think he may have been a good mentor in smithing for Curufin, because Curufin is the son who had both his mothername and fathername indicating he was Fëanor's Mini Me.

Re: Unpopular Opinions Thread

I struggle with Feanor too. To me, it always felt like he had children to compensate for the loss of his mother. The reason his dad remarried was to have a bigger family, so Feanor was out to make that happen just on his own and to prove Indis was unnecessary. It wasn't an inherent desire for children because he liked children and wanted to be a dad.

I just think he was so wrapped up in himself that he didn't really see his children or their needs. He would use them to further his own ends, and I'm sure he was delighted when they connected with his own passions. He would even be delighted in Maglor being praised for being such a renowned musician, even if he might not appreciate it for himself.

He must've done something to engender his sons' deep love and loyalty, but I agree that it is hard to see him as a loving father. I do think that Nerdanel's influence may have been heaviest in this area, making sure he paid attention when he otherwise might not have.

I'm the FFIX hater from the other day.

FFIV is superior. I had more fun in that game than any other entry I've played.

I felt vindicated seeing the stans trip over themselves to assure themselves that anyone who dislikes their game for any valid reason just has no taste, is wrong, and is doing it wrong.

The way middle class and upper-middle class white people stop giving a shit about their kids and kick them to the curb and refuse to offer them any further support once they've reached some arbitrary age mark (18 is the standard, I think), is really fucking bizarre.

I'm happy for the gays, but I'm worried that no-one seems to care about the marriage crisis straight women face.

Gay men can now marry each other, but straight men are refusing to take on that responsibility in record numbers.

I'm not against gay marriage I swear, I just think it's not the total victory everyone else sees it as.

The Irish potato famine was mostly the Irish's own fault, crop rotation and dangers of not doing so were already well know, the English landlords were actually trying to stop them continually planting potatoes, and other root crops were widely available. England did actually send food aid, but the indigenous Irish black market run by Irish city-dwellers intercepted it and roving Irish brigands kept murdering British land agents who tried to identify areas to send aid or from which people needed to be evacuated. Sure the English of the time were racist, but they were not heartless. It was the Irelanders fellow countrymen who were that.

I think Death of the Author gives most authors more credit than they deserve.

First you've got the world, which is so complex that no one person can fully understand it. Then you've got the author's interpretation of the world (or a fantastical setting inspired by the world), which is based in their knowledge and experiences. Since they're just one person, each author's world is smaller than the real world, and doesn't address some factors another author might discuss.

If you're Dickens, you can write what you've seen even if you don't fully understand it. Death of the Author can bring out new ideas and address concepts that might not have even existed in your time, like how the abused girlfriend in Oliver Twist fits a modern conception of Battered Spouse Syndrome. But if you're Hawthorne, you just write your limited conception of what is and must be true, ignoring any possible point of contradiction. An analysis based on another viewpoint is difficult or even impossible, because the world elements that would allow for the existence of that viewpoint don't exist in the text.

To put it more starkly, you cannot take the racism out of Lovecraft. It just can't be done.

I think the actual number of asexual people are very low and that most people who claim tobe ace either have a low sex drive (possibly due to depression) or haven't found someone they're compatible with. I still try to treat them as though I take their self identification at face value, but deep down I have a hard time believing this.

I'm wary of those "I was adopted/gave up a child" posts on Facebook. I think it's great that people have found loved ones through that, but some of them name the person they're looking for and I can't help but think... what if they're forcing someone to address a painful part of their past, and their biological mother/father/whatever will have to do so through Facebook?

Same with "missing" adult loved ones. It's one thing when they're clearly vulnerable and/or actually missing and being searched for by authorities. With both cases, what if they don't want to be found?

I want people to acknowledge that while Snape is in no way justified for everything, he was still used and abused by most everyone around him, James was a horrible person who didn't get much better, and Lily is not and was not a perfect angel.

Something you learn when dealing with people who bully and who've been bullied is that bullying victims tend to fall into the wrong crowd because those crowds will prey upon them with offers of protection and acceptance. As well, I recall Lily becoming friends with James while he was still bullying Snape.

Neither James and Snape were good people, and I'm really just tired of fandom letting James off the hook for his shit because they like to think he couldn't be that bad.

I can't wait for Supernatural or Sherlock (or Doctor Who, but that's probably going to last forever at this rate...) to be canceled so I can rub it in a friend of a friend's face for being so vindictive about Hannibal's cancellation.

She claims she hates the show because all one of her friends does is talk about it, and I just stared at her because all SHE ever talks about is SuperWhoLock and her fucking Bennykins. Could you be any more hypocritical?!
