I want people to acknowledge that while Snape is in no way justified for everything, he was still used and abused by most everyone around him, James was a horrible person who didn't get much better, and Lily is not and was not a perfect angel.

Something you learn when dealing with people who bully and who've been bullied is that bullying victims tend to fall into the wrong crowd because those crowds will prey upon them with offers of protection and acceptance. As well, I recall Lily becoming friends with James while he was still bullying Snape.

Neither James and Snape were good people, and I'm really just tired of fandom letting James off the hook for his shit because they like to think he couldn't be that bad.

Standard recruiting tactics for cults and neo-nazi gangs is to find an ostracised and neglected person and then promise them family and power. The inherent institutional ostracism of the Slytherin House (It is the "evil" house, everyone hate them) made even regular Slytherins easy prey since all they would have is other Slytherins, a talented half-blood amongst normally pure-blood Slytherins? Easiest pickings ever. It becomes a vicious circle after a while, of course, and a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm sure having the Head and Deputy Head both coming from the same school house which traditionally had the strongest anti-slytherin sentiment did not help either. Even if they were both scrupulously fair, it wouldn't always been seen as that (and we know that Dumbledore was seldom scrupulously even handed).

It is just a huge mess, but I think that may -in later books, at least- be exactly what JK was trying to show. The whole system was rotten to the core, and even the good guys were corrupted by it and even the bad guys who were theoretically in power were harmed by it. Just like real life.

NAYRT, but I agree completely.

Pretty much. No one's hands are entirely clean.
