There are a few things you can do.

Altitude and humidity can sometimes affect your cake. Sometimes putting the cake in the fridge before frosting can help. Sometimes pulling back on the liquid a little can help, but be careful you don't do it by too much. But, if you like the cake and just frosting it was the issue, then you could go with a softer frosting (add more milk or cream) or you could go with a cooked frosting that you pour while it's still warm and then it hardens up as it cools (like some fudge frostings).
