After hearing so many people bitch about "queer baiting" on Supernatural, I finally caught up on the show and it's like...really? That's what people harass the actors and creators of the show over? It's embarrassing. Some people's shipping goggles are so tight that they're clearly cutting off the circulation to their brain

There was some stuff in the early seasons with Cas. It was in the writing. Other characters would call out their 'special' relationship. But that ended by season six. And now it's like they have director notes not to acknowledge each other if they're in the same scene unless they need to say lines to each other.

(Although Cas still does things out of loyalty to Dean. (( But it's more like they're friendly ex rather than anything more.))

Yeah. There was definitely some subtext early on. But that has fallen by the wayside now to uncomfortable degree...

haha, ikr? They must really fear the shippers or something. Hell, Castiel and Sam have had way more ship fodder than Dean/Castiel over the past couple of seasons

I think it's a shame because when they're allowed Jensen and Misha have genuine warmth and chemistry with one another. The absence sucks life out of their shared scenes.

ayrt

when they're allowed Jensen and Misha have genuine warmth and chemistry with one another.

I agree; they've had some genuinely touching scenes in the past. I don't know if the shippers have actually influenced the fact that they don't much fulfilling interaction together anymore, but it's a bummer whatever the reason is.

nayrt, but I do think it is a reaction to the over-the-top shippers. Sure, it's not the reaction the Destielers were hoping for, but some of them were so obnoxious and insistent with the writing staff, I'm not surprised the writers dialled back on the fanservice since too many were taking it wayyyy too seriously.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm afraid you're probably not wrong about that. I think half the reason I gave up on season 10 was the most emotional thing Dean said to Cas was, 'You'll end me,right?' Which shows a pretty heavy duty level of trust, but then they mostly went back to ignoring each other again. They're like exs that have to be around each other for work.

If they'd actually done something with that - acknowledging the change in their relationship (even interpreted as a serious friendship rather than anything romantic)- maybe it would be less frustrating to watch.
