I can't wait for season two but I'm not going to lie, it was hate at first sight with Shane. I remember texting my friend, "Who's this sexist asshole?" I only hated him more and more as the show went on.

Haven't seen the actor in anything else, but I can't say I'm pleased at him joining the cast either. (It's irrational, but *shrugs* Maybe he'll be a lovable asshole instead of just an asshole.)

I'm not sure if I would generally call The Punisher a lovable asshole...I mean, he's not always a straight up asshole, but he's not quite lovable

As someone who knows jack shit about the character, I didn't realize that.

Though I know that the comic book and tv version will probably differ to some degree, so who knows what will happen.

Yeah, The Punisher is one of the grittiest characters at Marvel's disposal and his lighthearted moments can be pretty sparse. That's not to say that he's never kind or never forms relationships with people or anything, it's just that a lot of writers have no fucking idea what to do with him and often figure that writing him as an outright psychopath is good enough and don't utilize the fact that he can be a pretty complex and interesting character. Plus, a lot of the time when he shows up in other titles, the writers just use him more as a plot device than an actual character so that other heroes can see his behavior and learn a "valuable lesson" from it or so they can chastise him. A prime example of this is the fact that in the Civil War arc, it was after seeing The Punisher's (who was, like Cap, anti-registration) behavior that Captain America suddenly had an epiphany and realized that the anti-registration side was totes wrong and Tony was right all along.

I'm really hopeful that the show will give him some good writing though and flesh him out well

It seems that the MCU hasn't been too 'strict' with keeping to the original characters likeness, so maybe he'll be a bit more likable and won't come off as one-note.

Or at least I hope so, because while Daredevil was unexpectedly dark, it still had a lot of humor, and even the main baddy had his 'good' moments. (...Or, not sure you would call them that, but his relationship with Vanessa and Wesley made him more real to me.)

Plus, a lot of the time when he shows up in other titles, the writers just use him more as a plot device than an actual character so that other heroes can see his behavior and learn a "valuable lesson" from it or so they can chastise him.

Doesn't Punisher have a pretty enthusiastic fanbase? Kind of surprised to think of that after reading this, lol.

He does (although, honestly, a lot of Punisher fans are kind of gross. he has a lot of ~hardcore~ fanboys that are very offputting) but he still has far less fans than a lot of the other Marvel superheroes so maybe they care less about character assassination with him or something, idk. A lot of the decisions from Marvel writers confuse me tbh.

I agree that the show will probably give him some depth though, especially since interviews have implied that Daredevil and Punisher are going to team up at some point next season.

Maybe they just like asshole characters. God knows I've liked asshole characters before, and sometimes it isn't so much despite that fact but because of that fact.

It's def rarer for me, but on occasion the right combination comes along and something ~magical~ happens. I don't know if that's what's going on with Punisher's fanbase or not, but it'll be interesting to see how the MCU fandom reacts to him. (I will laugh and laugh and then possibly cry if he's rotten to the core and fandom woobifies him.)

especially since interviews have implied that Daredevil and Punisher are going to team up at some point next season.

Hmm, considering Matt's stance on killing that should be something else.

Eh, my experience is that plenty of people would think "lovable asshole" definitely applies.

Shane was not the last character I hated on Walking Dead (omg, I hated The Gov so much), but he was probably the one I hated the most. I almost want to apologize to the actor for all the shit I've said about Shane over the years, lmao.

Lmao right?? I love the actor (unless he's problematic, then someone will probably point it out), but god Shane was literally the worst and I wanted him to die so bad lol. The Gov is tied at the top of that list.

Shane was... Idek how to describe Shane, but he was so damn irritating and awful and I think he went at the right time. Gov was terrible too and frankly, I feel like he should've died earlier. His solo episodes are probably my least favorite WD episodes ever... I won't rewatch them.

I mean I was okay with Shane for like 2 eps and then I was definitely not into that bullshit he was pulling. I know omg his solo eps and Shane's were like the most cringe-worthy for me.

The one I couldn't stand was LORI. UGH.

She had her moments, I'll give you that, but my feelings on Lori aren't nearly as strong as the ones for Shane or the Gov. But then again I didn't loathe Andrea either so I'm a black sleep in this fandom, lol.

I have never in my life hated a character as much as I hate Shane.

I think I have other characters I've hated just as much, like Ramsay Bolton or Joffrey Baratheon/Lannister..lol
van: daredevil comics character (comics dd)

[personal profile] van 2015-07-02 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
He started out in Marvel as a straight up villain and then slowly became an anti-hero. The crazy thing is although everything is Matt/Foggy at the mo, in the comics the end game relationship is more often Matt Murdock/Frank Castle. Weird, right? They're always at each other's throats and they beat the crap out each other all the time, but there's a really twisted friendship there, too. For example, DD usually gets in Frank's way when Frank is cleaning up the streets, and by cleaning up I mean straight up killing evil people (he doesn't kill what he perceives as 'innocents' and this includes DD who he calls 'choirboy' or 'altarboy' - they both have a very serious Catholic background), and he's actually carried tranq darts to incapacitate DD without killing him. Or uses sonic bombs to screw with DD's senses. Also, yes, Frank knows about DD's senses and knows how to abuse them.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-07-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope Punisher gives Matt the nickname choirboy or altarboy (Maybe near the end of the season, after they've had multiple run ins?) because those are damn fun nicknames. I wouldn't be against the thought of them having a friendship, as long as it's built up in the right way. I don't want them to ignore Matt/Foggy either though, because those two's adorable relationship was one of the best parts of season one for me.

However the thought of Matt having a sort of (half) friendly rival works for me. If they're supposed to work together that's probably where this will go.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I LOATHED Shane. Just like you, from the very first scene. Though it definitely got worse the longer he was on the show. I genuinely celebrated when he was finally killed off, though I did feel bad the actor was out of a job. And I do appreciate what JB did with the character because he definitely got a reaction out of me :)

That being said, I don't mind that he was cast in DD. I've never seen him in anything else and Shane was the kind of character I would've hated no matter who played him so I'm going to be hopeful and assume he'll be good in DD.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I was fed up with him too by the time he died, but of course it sucked for the actor. Though Walking Dead is not the most stable job, lol. He would've went sooner and later. (His obsession with Lori was getting out of hand by that time anyway...)

You raise a good point in that Shane wasn't a salvageable character; he would've been an asshole no matter what actor played him. Punisher doesn't sound like the most lovable guy, but maybe he'll be more complex and Marvel will do something interesting with him.
