Watch the 90s series. Seriously. Crystal has bad pacing, a lot of really stupid changes to the plot compared to the manga, terrible animation even compared to the 90s anime, and the characters are horrifically flat.

The 90s anime is fairly slow paced and very monster-of-the-week, but imo it's a lot more engaging. Crystal's sort of all over the place as they jump at light speed through the overarching story and as a result the important plot points feel lackluster. All the build-up that lends it emotional weight is lacking.

I went into both series blind last year, and dropped Crystal after a few eps.
