What's happening?

The company unceremoniously canned the woman who was responsible for AMAs, didn't tell the mods at IAmA, and didn't have any sort of backup or replacement for her at the ready. An AMA that was in active progress actually got cut off and crashed because of it. IAmA's mods, unsure what to do and lacking any contact information for any of the other people scheduled to do AMAs that day, hastily made the sub private.

There's apparently been a bunch of problems with reddit admin not communicating or working with mods, and this was the last straw. At one point, something like 250 subs had "gone dark" either because they also host AMAs or in solidarity. News outlets started reporting on it (including the BBC). And people are scrambling to find alternative sites.

It's AMAZING.

I swear everything, everything, is 5th more entertaining over there right now.

Long story short, one of the staff, Victoria Taylor aka Chooter, has been instrumental in running the AMAs, which are Reddit's biggest draw, a major PR coup for celebs who participate, and easily one of the most positive things Reddit does. She coordinates, helps less computer/Reddit-literate celebs over the phone or in person, makes sure it's actually the celeb and not their agent or whoever, and so on. She's one of the most important people on Reddit staff.

Until they fired her without warning or notice, leaving r/IAmA in the lurch as they had several AMAs scheduled for that day and without her there it was impossible. IAmA went private (effectively shutting down) for the day because of it, and several other major subreddits, like r/science and r/books and r/askreddit, did the same out of solidarity because of a long history of abuse and neglect by Reddit admins who take their unpaid subreddit mods (who number in the thousands) for granted and have yet to update the site's mod tools or basically do anything to make Reddit more usable. (I half suspect that a lot of why certain really awful subreddits like fatpeoplehate were left to fester instead of being banned is because the admin are lazy bastards.)

Actually they were left to fester because the admins don't give a shit about hateful subreddits unless they're involved in brigading, doxxing, or otherwise bring them bad publicity. And probably laziness.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Unless it could cost them their job or cause legal issues, they simply can't be bothered.

Oh sorry! I must have misread you. It's just that I remember the admins, particularly Yishan, claiming free speech when people complained about shit like fatpeople hate and the various racist subreddits.

"Free speech:" the battle cry of the lazy and/or bigoted.

Was it true that the company intended to turn the AMAs into "PR shilling", so the speak, with prescreened questions and everything -> and she had a problem with that -> she got canned?

That's the major rumor, but it's not confirmed.

That's the going theory, anyway.

There's a lot of little dots being connected everywhere that support this. I'm hoping someone makes a master post of the Grand conspiracy eventually. Kickme444 is probably a key. He built redditgifts and made it what it is and fucking won Guinness World Records and got Bill Gates name associated with Reddit. Being fired without severance after being known as anti-monetizing some aspects is shady.

If you want the really long explanation, there it is. Otherwise, read the tl;dr summary that Dethtoll wrote up.
