The company unceremoniously canned the woman who was responsible for AMAs, didn't tell the mods at IAmA, and didn't have any sort of backup or replacement for her at the ready. An AMA that was in active progress actually got cut off and crashed because of it. IAmA's mods, unsure what to do and lacking any contact information for any of the other people scheduled to do AMAs that day, hastily made the sub private.

There's apparently been a bunch of problems with reddit admin not communicating or working with mods, and this was the last straw. At one point, something like 250 subs had "gone dark" either because they also host AMAs or in solidarity. News outlets started reporting on it (including the BBC). And people are scrambling to find alternative sites.

It's AMAZING.
