(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 05:50 am (UTC)(link)A fandom specific LJ comm going batshit? Leave it and join/create another one. A forum's admin decided to change everything for SJ-like reasons/how dare they to ship that? Leave it, and go to another.
Now that tumblr is the main fandom site, we don't have that kind of separation. Everything is on the tags and blacklisting/blocking stuff and people is never enough and even if you follow only a few selected people and avoid the tags, someone may still find you and give you a "friendly" reminder that ___ is wrong.
And there's the hive mind issue that was mentioned up-thread, so basically: tumblr amplifies the worse of fandom with ease.

I follow several tumblrs from people in my fandoms who are pro-gun, outspoken Republicans and militaria aficionados and not once has any of them ever been attacked by the dreaded hivemind. I haven't seen a single comment "policing" anybody's right to like anything in literally years following tumblr fandom CoD, RE, Ao2, Battlefield, STALKER, Metro, firearms...
So yeah "those people" are actually completely avoidable and it's entirely possible they won't follow you off on your own shit at all. I heard about how terrible and insipid and "SJW" and hive-minded tumblr was for ages before I actually joined it, only to find it was ten kinds of horseshit. Sure, I honestly think there are ways in which old!LJ!fandom was better, but everything I've been told about tumblr so far has been lies.
Feel free to keep hiding under your bed, trembling at the thought that someone might disagree with you about something, or not like what you like, and have the audacity to say so to you, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)The fandoms you listed are not the ones best known for this type of behaviour. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist elsewhere. So fuck you very much.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)I'm bemused.
Why, exactly, are you assuming your experience is everyone's experience so anyone who says something different is lying?
This is even more confusing because I never said all tumblr is evil, just that the worst parts are more obvious are harder to avoid.
Hell, my own experience on tumblr has been relatively ok, but despite being a low profile user, getting into fandoms with heavy SJW presence ended with me getting involved once in a "right pronouns for a character" wank and during that time I got a good amount of pretty offensive anon asks. That fandom also taught me to never visit or use certain tags.
But the thing that makes me wonder if maybe you wanted to reply another comment is this: "trembling at the thought that someone might disagree with you about something, or not like what you like".
And you know why? Because not caring about other's people tastes and wanting to have a fun fandom experience is not the same as being unable to stand other people's different opinions.
In fact the ones that can't tolerate other people having different tastes are the issue in tumblr, since they have demonstrated they're willing to do anything to try chasing anyone who disagree with them away in an attempt to make tumblr into their private echo chamber. (And sadly, there are enough examples of that... but if you consider them false because it's not your experience)

I'm not sure how you read my comment, but I said that I was told that tumblr was a terrible place and that if I joined it, I would be feasted on by the SJW jackals (particularly since the fandoms I'm in aren't exactly politically correct) but when I joined it, that didn't happen. So anyone who states or implies as much are liars.
If we're both just sharing our experiences here, then it roughly amounts to "maybe you'll have contact with pricks who make fandom unpleasant, maybe you won't," which is... exactly what I could say about literally other fandom forum in existence, past or present. So why is it that tumblr alone is so demonized?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)So in short, since you haven't experienced everyone who has had those encounters despite trying to avoiding them is a liar?
"So why is it that tumblr alone is so demonized?"
Because (I quote myself and fix a typo) "the worst parts are more obvious and harder to avoid."

You know the "as much" is literally right there in what I wrote, right? The told "tumblr was a terrible place and that if I joined it, I would be feasted on by the SJW jackals" part? That people who said or implied that that would happen to me lied, because it didn't happen? A statement that is not even remotely similar to "everyone who has had these encounters despite trying to avoid them is a liar" to any sane, rational person?
Can you actually read or are you just going to keep responding to an imaginary person who said things you're really angry about, for some reason, but I'm the only real person talking to you?
Because (I quote myself and fix a typo) "the worst parts are more obvious and harder to avoid."
So say you, but honestly, where's your proof? It's been even more amicable than LJ, and far more amicable than most gaming forums, in my experience. My whole point here is that you're saying shit about tumblr I've heard over and over and over again, but when I went there myself, it utterly failed to materialize, and while I don't doubt that some of it has actually happened to people, it has also happened to people literally everywhere on the internet and I am now skeptical in the extreme that tumblr is actually worse.
