Still happens, just not in the same way.

Like "someone is murdered". Okay, but that says nothing about the build up (which - yay! - can get more nerve-racking if you know something bad will happen), who the victim is, who the murderer is, significance to the rest of the plot, the other character's reactions, and so on and so forth...

Sure, some stories are better if you go into them unspoiled, but if the spoiler's the only thing it has going for it then it's not a very good story in the first place.
