What are you reading?

[personal profile] iceyred 2015-07-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished reading 'Uprooted' by Naomi Novik. The romance was okay, but it felt a bit tacked on. My preferred ship is Agniescka/Kasia. F/F isn't my usual fare, but their relationship was really great.

The fairy tale elements were awesome too. Highly recommended. Here's a link to the goodreads page:

Oooh, I recently finished 'Northanger Abbey' for the first time. 'P&P' is next on the list. I'm pretty happy to have finally gotten around to reading Austen.

Definitely not still reading House Of Leaves like I've been doing for 2 years. >.> <.< >.>

I've been reading Foucault's Pendulum since 1998!

I'm rereading a bunch of Dashiell Hammett. Red Harvest is really fun because I wrote a sort of fantasy pastiche of it about five years ago and I forgot just how on the nose it was in some places.

Dashiell Hammett owns, IMO

Alternating between "The Emperor of All Maladies" and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay." The latter is more entertaining but gets a little overbearing from time to time so I switch back to the formal for some tidy medical history.

I just finished 'Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.' Picked it up at the dollar store. It was aight.

Now I'm in the middle of the 'Orange is the New Black' book. I'm finding it a bit disjointed. The stories are interesting, but she needed a better editor for it to have a cohesive feel.

When I read Orange Is the New Black, I kept wondering how her boyfriend felt about the portrayal of the character based on him in the show. He seemed like such a better person than the character they turned him into.

I could not get past page 3 of that OITNB book but I love the TV show!

I'm rereading LOTR for the first time since I read it way back when Fellowship was coming out. Boy, is there a lot I forgot.

Re-reading LOTR for the I-don't-know-how-manyth time.

I'm rereading Maskerade. It's been a few years since I read it the first time, so I've forgotten most of it, except the basic plot.

Oh, I love Maskerade!

Currently not much, but I've been thinking I should go pick up Mika Waltari's The Egyptian from the library. Maybe tomorrow.

I've read that one. It's a bit depressing in some parts, and it's a bit nihilistic, but it wasn't bad.

Alternating between The Portrait of a Lady and Reed Noss's Forgotten Grasslands of the South, which I bogged down in and decided to go back to after several months.

"The Return" by William Shatner. The samples of his writing I'd read before didn't impress me so I've never checked out his Star Trek books, but I was reading the summaries online and they all charmed me enormously. All, "Kirk and his new pal Picard and the fine officers of Starfleet protect the galaxy!" "Kirk and his wife whom he loves faithfully live in domestic bliss!" "Kirk and his buddy Picard go on an archaeology vacation together!" So cute. It's nothing amazing so far but there's been some good moments and the characters are pretty well done.

Dragging my way through The Anxiety of Kalix the Werewolf, which is a series I think is hitting diminishing returns.

Working through some Indian theology texts in translation.

I'm about halfway through Hurley's Mirror Empire, and I think that kind of fantasy isn't my thing currently. Although it does some nice things with construction of gender and culture.

On standby are Butler's collected Lilith's Brood, an ebook of Tor's web-published fiction, and three volumes of Apex World Science Fiction anthologies. I also just got my hands on Foucault's Pendulum at a book sale.

You are reading many interesting things. Are those theology texts from the subcontinent, or are they Native American?

Also, I've been looking for more science fiction ever since I picked up an Ann Leckie book. Got any recs?
