God I hate AO3 tags. Well, I hate people's cutsey stupid tags, anyway. Wish people would just have actual tags that help people find shit with the basics - genres, pairings, and such. I just assume the author is an annoying person when they do dumb tags like that.

Also... "everyone is poly because avengers"? What even?

Put the blame where it belongs: Those are tumblr tags that people started using on AO3, on the other hand, just acknowledges that it can't predict every useful tag a person could want to use, so gives users the option to pick their own.

Then the fucking tumblrinas ruin it.

Do you blame everything on tumblr.
I know everyone on here has a huge hate bonner for that site, but c'mon guys, you need to get over it.

I blame very little on tumblr, actually. This just happens to be one of the ocassions where it's at fault.

Yeah, like I am a huge tumblr user and ardent defender, but this is legitimately a tumblr thing.

I honestly love tumblr tagging on tumblr. It is fun. You can say amusing thing about posts when you reblog without actually adding it to the post.

But that type of tagging belongs on Tumblr. It does not belong on AO3 where the tags are supposed to be about making it easier for people to find the type of fics they want.

Fortunately there are skins that allow you to hide those non-canon custom tags.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
tell me more...
here can i find these?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Just look for the "Skins" button (I assume this only works if you have an Ao3 account and are logged in though).

The skin descriptions are sort of repetitive and the nuances between them aren't always apparent (well at least to me), but I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one skin that hides the extra tags behind a "Show More Tags" link.

Under Preferences is "Skins"
click "Public Site skins"

One that looked promising: Blurbling Hide Freeform tags

Oh! Also, under your Preferences, under "Display" there's a checkbox to "Hide additional tags"

I prefer to see these tags so I know which fics to avoid. It saves time, you see. If your tag list is 300 deep and your fic is a drabble, I want the earth to swallow you whole and drag you to the pits of hell.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
true, but with the freeform tags temporarily hidden it's faster to scroll through a list, then just click to show the eleventy-jillion idiotags for any fic that you might otherwise consider reading.
