Fortunately there are skins that allow you to hide those non-canon custom tags.

tell me more...
here can i find these?

Just look for the "Skins" button (I assume this only works if you have an Ao3 account and are logged in though).

The skin descriptions are sort of repetitive and the nuances between them aren't always apparent (well at least to me), but I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one skin that hides the extra tags behind a "Show More Tags" link.

Under Preferences is "Skins"
click "Public Site skins"

One that looked promising: Blurbling Hide Freeform tags

Oh! Also, under your Preferences, under "Display" there's a checkbox to "Hide additional tags"

I prefer to see these tags so I know which fics to avoid. It saves time, you see. If your tag list is 300 deep and your fic is a drabble, I want the earth to swallow you whole and drag you to the pits of hell.

true, but with the freeform tags temporarily hidden it's faster to scroll through a list, then just click to show the eleventy-jillion idiotags for any fic that you might otherwise consider reading.
