Well, a bunch of the fandom on Tumblr thinks it's already canon. There's a popular post that literally says them going drinking was officially canonically a romantic date.

I... don't subscribe to that post or ship it, but I do hope there's more of their relationship in the new season. I love Rui and Hajime too, but I love everyone.

honestly from the rest of your secret you just sound kinda bitter in general that people aren't focusing very much on these boys and instead are excited about a really good character who is (extremely easily interpretable as) trans, something that, well, is kind of absent from almost all media. you should maybe rethink these feelings and where they're coming from. or not, i mean it's your life.

Meaning it's the reason there's so much wank in the fandom. If OP's bitter about Rui's popularity, I don't blame them. And I say this with Rui as my favorite character (but not because of anything to do with gender or crossdressing)

It's only easy to interpret Rui as trans if you have an incredibly shallow, black-and-white view of gender.

Wearing pretty clothes doesn't mean jack shit except he likes wearing pretty clothes. It'd be a different story if he showed even the slightest hint of dysphoria, or discomfort about his biological sex, or demonstrated any kind of desire to be female or be treated as female. But he doesn't. At all.

If you want trans headcanons, what about OD? Or, hell, you could even make a better argument for Hajime being trans because she uses masculine pronouns. It's very (very) flimsy, yes, but at least it relates to her behaviour rather than her appearance.
