it's not the male character having emotion that i hate. i hate the fact that sooo many stories have a dead wife/mom/daughter. it turns women into plot devices and then men get to drive the story.

Or the main male character's wife or girlfriend is raped and they somehow manage to make it all about his pain.

Ugh, yes. It pissed me off when Downton Abbey had that storyline where Anna was raped and it quickly turned into something that was less about her own feelings and healing process and more about Bates angsting about his murderous feelings towards her rapist (and then it became all about Mary feeling conflicted about whether she should turn Bates in to the police when he actually did murder the guy). I was really happy that most reviewers of the show found it just as distasteful
