I agree, anon. I believe that certain media should be focusing more on women, sure, but it's ridiculous to dismiss a character's pain just because they're a man. What, do these people think men are not people and should not be allowed to feel anything?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I literally don't even understand what the 'manpain' critique is supposed to mean, anymore

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's a derogatory term used on any male character that shows emotions related to what he's going through, ie- Daredevil's struggle with surrendering his life and happiness to keeping Hell's Kitchen safe.

look at batman not being a functional human being, and compare captain America befriending his shrink and working in the VA. that is a logical division between manpain and 'real' emotion.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I can't take anyone uses 'problematic' in such a context seriously.

One of my favourite parts of Mad Max Fury Road is when Furiosa has a big deep over dramatic "manpain" moment. Because movies always take the dude's anguish in a big deep serious overdone manner and the women tend to be glossed over or trivialised. So Furiosa getting to partake of some overly cheesy manpain was great for me, I loved it.

So it's not that a man's anguish is being triviliased, it's just that quite a few movies really overdo the drama around it while at the same time trivialising the womens. Hence, manpain. Or mangst. Or just plain angst. Over dramatic continuous themes all around the upset or agony of X.

None of those examples are considered trivial though soo....

Since when is a white couple a prerequisite for a man's pain to be "manpain"? Are nonwhite couples and couples with only one white person exempt from manpain on the grounds that they're "progressive" and nothing can be both progressive and problematic at the same time?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I looked up the Tumblr for the first part and this is what I got:

"I'm a white genderqueer story artist
please use gender neutral pronouns for me (they/them/their)
if you're feeling super fancy, you can use the pronouns ze/'im/ser"

It couldn't be more Tumblr if I wrote it myself.

it's not the male character having emotion that i hate. i hate the fact that sooo many stories have a dead wife/mom/daughter. it turns women into plot devices and then men get to drive the story.

I can't take the term "manpain" seriously.
I can't.
It sounds so much like Tumblr vomit, that every time I see it, I just kind of chuckle and put my head down on my hands.

Just ignore it, OP.
You're probably better off than to heed the kind of bullshit that probably also thinks the color orange is a legitimate gender.

There are criticisms to be had about the obsession with a protagonist's suffering at the dismissal of everyone else in the work, but "LOLMANPAINZ CRY MOAR" isn't it, and you shouldn't expect intelligent discussion from that kind of mindset.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:23 am (UTC)(link)

I only consider "man pain" to be when a guy angsts and angsts 24/7 over either something really tiny and stupid, or the classic fridged girlfriend trope.
People who use it whenever male characters show emotion are p obnoxious.
Because lol Foggy and Matt defiantly had reasonable things to be upset about.

I agree and I hate that now it's used as a derogratory term instead of a (very valid) critique to media.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Late, but...yeah. I'm with you. The "manpain" argument was ORIGINALLY a pretty good shot and a necessary one, cause it was usually used as a corollary to fridging - female secondary character gets tortured/raped/killed, male main character guilts and angsts over it before going on a vengeance rampage. It's not a terrible storyline on its face because it COULD be done well and respectfully and with what I feel is an appropriate amount of focus on the jourjey of the actual survivor, and on the rare occasion it has. But it's SO OVERUSED NOW and it's alllllways done the same weakass way: woman suffers, but it's all about how THE MAN IN HER LIFE deals with it. That shit, I'm sorry, is gross. That storyline NEEDED a shorthand term to mock and degrade it, cause it sucks

Unfortunately, not everyone who uses the phrase seems to quite get what it means and people go too far. It's annoying but it happens all the time so you got only 2 options: correct them when they do, or just shake your head and roll on.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I understand, "manpain" is supposed to refer to a male character who responds to emotional pain in a very stereotypical set of ways and where the narrative presents this as The Way To Deal. It's the film noir detective with the dead wife brooding over the photo of his dead wife while knocking back scotches and never telling anyone about it or crying. It's a cliché way of presenting male emotional suffering that doesn't allow for the entire spectrum of emotional response.

It's an important criticism to make of popular media. But as the secret says, I think it's being used in some circles to refer to any male character experiencing emotion. It's gone the way of the term "Mary Sue", which is now being used for "any female character I feel is over-powered/don't like" by a lot of people. And that's also a problem because it's difficult to make a legitimate criticism of a lazy or harmful trope when people are using the most well-known term in rude or hurtful ways.

So yeah. I'm with you there, OP. Especially when it comes to men crying and over trivial things. It's difficult enough to find male characters in popular media who are allowed to cry over the little things without mocking them.

Also, all my best wishes to your father. Depression is not an easy thing to live with and I hope he's doing well.
