I literally don't even understand what the 'manpain' critique is supposed to mean, anymore

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's a derogatory term used on any male character that shows emotions related to what he's going through, ie- Daredevil's struggle with surrendering his life and happiness to keeping Hell's Kitchen safe.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, I understand what the words literally mean, but I don't understand what people are trying to get at when they use the words.

I mean, it can't literally just be "Stories about men suffering are dumb", but I don't see what people are driving at or what the underlying point is. I guess one explanation is that people who use it are dumb / evil SJWs, but that seems unlikely to me, and I'd really like to understand where the idea is coming from.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Used properly, 'manpain' refers to any time some terrible shit is happening to people adjacent to a man and it is the man's guilt or horror at this which is the focus.

"oh waaah war is so cruel I just had to watch a bunch of poor villagers burn to death"
"oh waaah my wife was raped by and that's really putting a damper on our relationship"
"oh waaah my kids are growing up without me but I'm too obsessed with solving the Big Case to spend time with them"

It's got its uses but can be abused, like pretty much every media criticism concept.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that bugs me is that in the case of death, like say your first example, how is the narrative supposed to focus on the feelings of the people who were affected the worst? They're fucking dead!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
If that asshole man can't take the time to pull out a ouiji board, he is fucking useless.

In that example, the dumb crybaby ISN'T the only possible living person who'd be affected. Who lives in the village nearby? Who's got to worry about the crybaby's war party? Let them be the hero instead.

I saw someone completely gloss over racism in favour of inflicting pointless angst on a women, finishing with lying to her because obviously she isn't strong enough. I consider That manpain.

Agreed, but with the minor amendment that some terrible shit is always happening to women and minorities, which is why no-one gives a fuck when men are complaining about "Muh hurt fee fees"

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ANYWHERE EVER? News to me, yo.

Also? Minor amendment that some terrible shit is always happening to people everywhere, gender need not be specified.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
No one cares about the dumb shit that makes men sad. You've heard the term that men are 'Playing life on easy mode'? That being the case, does anyone who has to live with the threat of rape day in day out, really care if men feel bad about some stupid shit?

Daredevil, for example, The women are constantly under dire threat, but they are the most awesome people, while the pretty white boys just cry and angst.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Women have it harder than men. By your logic, we should not care about women in America because WOMEN IN INDIA HAVE IT WAY WORSE!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that women have it worse so no-one cares about men, its that men have it best so no-one cares about men.

Men are at the top of the patriarchies food chain, so they have no right to complain to the people lower down than them.

IKR? I don't think they watched the show. It sounds like they're just spouting whatever echo chamber nonsense tumblr is selling them.

Ah yeah, all those damn men who were raped and abused having the audacity to be sad about it. I mean, just shut up and get over it right?

Probably no use debating someone with a black heart like you though.

HAHA omg okay no, apparently you didn't even watch Daredevil because you just basically shot yourself down in flames. Next time you're going to argue a point, at least know what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I think that originally it wasn't so much 'stories about men suffering are dumb' so much as 'it's annoying when stories focus on and empathize with the man's suffering while the suffering of everyone else around him is only brushed over'. It's for stories that seem to be emphasizing the pain of this one male character over everyone else's, even when their pain is what's causing his. Like, stories where the hero's angst over not being able to save this planet seems more important than the anger/pain/horror of the people whose planet it actually was.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, how dare stories pay the most attention to their main characters! What kind of bullshit writing is that!

I understand what you're saying, but 1) there wouldn't be so much of what you call 'manpain' if people weren't actively purchasing it, or fandom eating it up with a spoon everywhere you look. It's the economic law of supply and demand.

And 2) take Captain America: Winter Soldier, for example. Fandom loves Bucky and his relationship with Steve Rogers, but Buck is a killer, a murderer, a mind-wiped beast of an assassin. Do people in fandom actually pay any attention to the hoardes of dead bodies he's piled up? Tony Stark will, because Bucky killed his parents and you know that's been an ongoing butthurt for decades already. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. Natasha has also killed a bazillion people, but also hey, fandom really seems to like shipping her with other characters even though she's accepted her responsibility for all the bad things she's done globally, right? Does she still angst about things she's done? Yup. So in your opinion, who has the rightful manpain here? WHO IS ALLOWED TO HANG ONTO THEIR BROKEN EMOTIONS? Bucky? Steve? Tony? Natasha?

It's a trick question because you don't get to decide who heals up and who doesn't and which fictional characters stagnate into arrested emotional development. LIKE IRL, AMIRITE?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
look at batman not being a functional human being, and compare captain America befriending his shrink and working in the VA. that is a logical division between manpain and 'real' emotion.
