What was the reasoning for calling it a kerfluffle?

Why am I interested in this?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Kerfuffle is a great word. I don't know if it was appropriate to describe racefail however.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because "wank" originally referred to male masturbation, so consequently was patriarchal.

I know nothing about this debate, but I'm curious if there's any connection to the show Community? They use "race kerfuffle" in the episode where Shirley has her baby.

Racefail predates that episode of Community.

Racefail was 2009

I think Racefail fallout made the subsequent writing in the field exponentially worse. Do I need to explain why I would never say this un-anon?

IAWTC. And I also find it interesting to see how the landscape has shifted since then. I think that Racefail also kick-started the "call-out" culture. Everyone was signal-boosting and demanding that everyone weigh in on the issue.

I also think that Racefail signalled the end of the meta fandom era, which makes me sad, as discussing pan-fandom meta was one of the more enjoyable parts of fandom for me.

Racefail is from 2009. It's actually called Racefail '09. It was also very, very multifandom, especially widespread in fantasy fandoms.

IIRC, it was later aggravated some more by a godawful J2 RPS AU fic where Jared and Jensen are aid workers whose epic gay romance is set against the backdrop of the real life Haiti earthquake disaster, in which the real life Haitian victims are written in pretty racist Wise Black Guy ways and exist to facilitate the romance.

I always assumed 'kerfuffle' was like a particular single instance of wank. Like, a scuffle I guess. That's how I always heard it referred to on Fandom_Wank.

Speaking of which, kind of related, does anyone know what on earth happened to Journalfen/F_W? I had an urge to read the MsScribe story a while ago and noticed everything was down. Shame if all that was lost.

So I'm working half on memory and half on the updates posted on the forum during the initial downtime, but Journalfen had some kind of server move/shift. I think it also had something to do with shifting from LJ's code to DW's code, so right now Journalfen's at journalfen.com, but the old content hasn't been migrated yet.

Further news seems to be here: http://www.journalfen.com/users/system/

+2 I always took kerfluffle to mean ...like...a small little slap fight or scuffle, but nothing particularly big or worth attention...

This secret confuses me but 'kerfluffle' always seemed like a word used to describe something really silly and over the top that people were making fun of more than they were participating int.

'Wank' always seemed to be used for people arguing pretty strongly about something and the whole devolving into a mess, and anything 'fail' was when it just started off horrifying and got gradually worse and worse....

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is proof that it's futile to have words for each apparent subcategory of drama, because your understanding of the terms is the exact opposite of what I've been believing all these years. I always was told that a kerfluffle was any argument (silly or serious), whereas wank specifically referred to arguments that are silly and eyeroll-worthy to people who aren't invested in them.

Both now seem to be used interchangeably to refer to any and all internet arguments, so I suppose the distinction (if there ever was a true or commonly accepted one) doesn't matter.

"kerfuffle" just makes me think of that guy on Little Britain.
