I like her a lot, and like you I don't understand the fandom's seeming distaste for her.

I kind of preferred the character as she was played in the second half of S7 to where they took her in S8, though. Although I'm not sure how much of that is attributable to my general feelings about those seasons - I was really into what they were doing conceptually in S7 part two, even if the actual execution of the episodes wasn't always there, whereas for a lot of reasons I really was not a fan of S8 even when the execution was spot-on.

Anyway, yeah. Doctor Who fandom is basically a big ball of wank over every possible topic anyway. So c'est la vie.

I'm a bit like you, in that I can't and couldn't understand why everyone hates/hated her so much.

I'm not really big on Who these days; it's been on the wane for me for the past few years. But I haven't had any problem with her. At the very least, she was refreshing after a season of Constant Overwrought Pond Angst.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree. I was lukewarm about her with Matt but I liked her better with the new Doctor. She still doesn't wow me but I was happy when I heard that she wasn't actually leaving. I thought she'd found her Doctor.

(It feels like ages ago since I watched the last season though.)

She is, hands down, my favorite character from Doctor Who. Yeah, I don't un-anonymously reveal this to anyone, including my family...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you lol

She's my favourite nu!companion after Donna and Martha

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I love her, too. Maybe not as much as Amy, Martha and Donna (in that order), but I love her waaaaay more than Rose. So, yeah, I also share a pretty unpopular opinion all around.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Their dynamic is better... more equal I guess? Like he still considers himself to be better than her, but because this doctor is more obvious about it, she won't let him.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Really?

I don't think she let Matt, either.

I think for me there were several reasons. First, she and Capaldi just have better acting chemistry together. Second, the ridiculous flirting is gone. And third there is more to her character now. She isn't a mystery to be explored, she is a living, breathing character with depth so that instantly makes the relationship work better for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 To all of this. I am especially glad Clara is no longer a mystery to be solved, her introduction just seemed to make her more of a plot point then a character and it was hard to see Clara as a person that way.

In series 8 she felt more well rounded and she and Capaldi are great together.

Well, my problem has always been with the writing than her specifically. Clara honestly comes off like a Mary Sue, so it's a bit refreshing to see someone act all antagonistic towards her, I guess?

Either way, I'm probably done watching the show! I just don't think I like it enough, anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I like her. I liked her as a puzzle and I like her as a flawed human being.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I thoroughly agree that she's better with him. I couldn't even watch the show when it was her with Eleven.

The only important question to ask is:

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Has Moffat finished yet? B/c I won't even give NuWho a chance till he's done like dinner. Not that I was ever a great fan of NuWho under either showrunner...but I much preferred stuff like some of Donna/Ten, and as far as the only episode I saw with Clara (when she was inside the Dalek), the character wasn't actively terrible. (The writing was, but that's a given.)

....I also still have a horrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach TPTB are going to do to Peter Capaldi what they did to Colin Baker....

He was supposed to end his run when Matt Smith finished, then Capaldi came along with his wonderful ideas (there have been rumors about him butting heads with Moffat) and suddenly Mr. Moffat's bruised ego wouldn't let him quit.
And then after the first season with Capaldi was finished, Moffat was supposed to move on. Again, his ego wouldn't let him.
So... now we're stuck. Thankfully, most of the writing this season will be done by other people while he focuses on Sherlock.

(I just want a Moffat-free season. FFS is that too much to ask?)

Yep, now I'm getting flashbacks to JNT. :P

You mean he'd get fired? lol no
Fortunately Peter has too much sway in the industry/BBC. If he leaves, it'll be on his terms.

Moffat is still hanging on despite that he's been out of ideas for years.

I know Capaldi is signed on for at least 2 more series and I wish Moffat would leave before Capaldi does because I'd like to see a Moffat-less 12.

It's not even just that Moffat is bad but the show really could use a new take, RTD was getting tiresome by the end of his run too, and Moffat is more then tired by now.

I think this is a common sentiment actually. I too love her much more now that she's with Twelve. And plus, this last season we've learned more about who she is and I've found her really interesting. I wouldn't call her my favorite (Donna followed by Amy), but she is pretty awesome.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Clara is growing on people, especially now after series 8 because she's better with Capaldi and she's more of a well rounded character then she was in that lame half series in 7.

Honestly you can admit to liking her because fandom seems to be more evenly divided then back in series 7 where most people seemed to dislike her.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I still got angry walls of text and bitching 6 months ago when I praised Clara

this was on tumblr tho but... yikes

I'm not caught up to the recast, but I am also puzzled by the hatred of her.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
There's hate for her? I'm totally not in the fandom.

Capaldi is basically my favourite Doctor at this point, and I think she has a good dynamic with him. I'm not actually a Who fan, my boyfriend just watches it all the time and I get roped into it. I was totally uninterested in the show as a whole until she showed up, and then Capaldi showed up and BAM suddenly I love this show.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You have good taste.

Stay away from the general fandom.
