So much yes to that. He was terrible, just terrible.

To be fair, the cast of nu!Trek in general just plain sucks. Mostly because Trek is such a revered fandom with an incredibly rabid fanbase...the whole time I was watching Into Darkness, kept feeling like everyone involved was thinking, "Okay, gotta do my best TOS impression. Because if I try to take this series/part in any kind of new direction, the fans will eat me alive." That's what bugged me so danged much about Into Darkness: how damn safe they were playing it. That and they were clearly hoping that the retread of Wrath of Khan would cause the fanboys to cream their pants in delight and overlook the movie's flaws. Though it came across more as, nu!Trek knows the words, not the music.

But I freely admit to not being a huge Trekkie. Was totally a Star Wars girl growing up and I keep meaning to try Trek, but there's so much continuity that I'm not sure where to begin. Have seen Wrath of Khan, which was awesome.

I spent nu!Trek wondering whether Captain Kirk in TOS...yeah, I know the guy is something of an arrogant ass, but I do like to think that Captain Kirk did actually have some leadership skills and intelligence to go with it. Nu!Trek Kirk...They just do the old Informed Attribute bit, where they hope if they talk enough about what a great leader he is, the idiots in the audience will totally buy it and won't notice how very bad Kirk is at his job.

You really don't know what you're talking about, do you?

Don't judge TOS!Kirk by nuKirk. nuKirk is a caricature of TOS!Kirk. Yes, TOS!Kirk had all of those attributes, but in nuKirk, those pieces of his personality are magnified to form his entire character.

I love TOS!Kirk. And yes, there's leadership and intelligence and nuance aplenty.

I agree with you about nuKirk. It was just appalling.

They magnified all the TOS Kirk faults and on top of that, added the fact he didn't even deserve to be there. He only got in because of his dad. Yet everyone talked about how great a leader was, and we were supposed to believe it. At least TOS Kirk had done something to deserve being a captain.
