In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Blackjackrocket, who at one time was something of a BNF in Pokemon fandom, became famous in a bad way by saying she had no sympathy for the people who were caught in New Orleans by the storm and were stuck for days in that stadium under terrible conditions, because they had had ample warning and even if they didn't own cars, they could have walked out of the city to safety and lived off the land.

In vain people pointed out that a hurricane is a big damn storm that moves pretty fast, and its path is not exactly predictable, so there was a fair likelihood that anyone trying to outwalk Katrina would just end up caught in the storm anyway. Also that New Orleans is surrounded by swamps full of alligators, that the average city person knows very little about living off the land, and that many of the stranded people had small children or elderly dependents who could not go on extended hiking trips in dirty weather and live on katniss and nutria or whatever.

BJR would not let the subject go, and for extra offensiveness, said that people with small children and old people to take care of should have just abandoned them to their fate, "because that's what 'survival of the fittest' means."

Now, I believe that BJR is on the autism spectrum, so that affected her style of argumentation somewhat, but there are some things even that cannot excuse.

Jesus Christ. Glad I didn't see that while it happened!

BJR is a fucking psycho. Firsthand experience.

I first found them on Tumblr and actually silently agreed with them on some things about SJWs going too far. This doesn't change my opinions on those specific things, but wow that was insensitive, autism spectrum or not.

You forgot that she based the "living off the land thing" on her personal experience of getting lost once on a hiking trail for a couple of days, while the weather was good and she had plenty of food and water, and iirc catching a hurt pigeon in her backyard. Oh, and she blamed the people for living in the area in the first place.

It didn't help that she 1. got into more kerfuffles/drama soon after this, making her name stick in people's minds and 2. learned absolutely nothing from any of it.

I knew pigeons figured into it somewhere, but I'd forgotten the context.

IIRC, at least one friend of hers implored her to give it a rest, and she just would. not. stop.
