and I'm probably part of that percentage, so it made me dorkily happy.31. It's funny, because that's what makes me dislike characters the most. It's a choice that people in anime make far more often than people in real life--and the people who do it tend to do it without any regard for their own life. It isn't portrayed as a difficult decision, and that bothers me. I want to see someone struggle with it, to show that they value their own life too, it's just that this is more important. Or, to put their own life first, as most real people do. I never see that in anime.

This is exactly what happens in both xxxHolic and Saiyuki manga. By caring about yourself and your life, you show respect and caring for the people who care about you.
OTOH, I've a great weakness for sacrifice as well - as long as it really is meaningful. It doesn't have to be death; a person sacrificing their chance of happiness for the one they love and then still struggle on gets me every time.
