To be fair, most English departments I'm aware of also want to prepare the reader for allusions that are made.

It's a poor reason, but it is there.

I'd almost rather just have a giant list of allusions. x_x It's lazy, but it seemed to work well for all the biblical ones for my senior English class. Yes, yes, understanding allusions is important--but the insistence that a whole category of fiction is morally superior to all other types just really bothers me.

I tend to avoid allusions in my work as the idea of an allusion is "I have an idea, but such-and-such example in this widely-read work is better." It works a great deal, but it needs great force and economy to work properly. I can never find that force, and so I usually drop it.

The "classics" are ambiguous, but they invariably end up forming the backbone of our education. Why? Because they're widely talked about. I don't think it has anything to do with how "good" a work is--the value of a work comes from the individual connecting to the literature, after all--but since it has a great deal of literary criticism and analysis, we're further towards exploring that text more thoroughly. The Bible is an extremely old book, so the time for thousands of individuals to rewrite interpretations of that text is phenomenal.

In the "classics" section at my local bookstore, there are many books that I wouldn't think of as classic. But yet, they're there. And of course there's room for debate. Does a group of highly-distinguished Ph.D.s agreeing that a book is a classic make it a classic? Perhaps. Does it make it good? No!

So you see, I felt like I had to explore that idea. I am an English major focusing in writing and postmodern literature. If I had a class, I would love to get their reactions to "The Policeman's Beard is Half-Constructed," the computer written novel, just to see what they would come up with. I'm also a psychology major, so that's just my natural scientific curiosity.
