28. Writing a short story is a different skill set, but I think long fic is harder in the end because you have to keep it up longer. (*cue adolescent snickering at that sentence*) I can respect that, but it's still discouraging to see people say things like "anything less than 20k is unsatifying" because it tends to come across as "so if you can't produce that you shouldn't even bother".
I dunno about anyone else, but I often find I just don't have time to read something that long, anyway. 10k (about half an hour) is usually my upper limit of "light reading". I'm not against long stuff on principle and will sometimes commit to reading longer things (20-40k) if they are well-recommended, but the prospect of trying to catch up on a long WIP that is already into the hundreds of thousands of words is usually just too daunting. (I raise my eyebrows when a fic author has a single work that surpasses the entirety of the original canon.)

I spent 6 hours solid writing a measly 470 word story at the weekend. Heh.
I'll read 'owt if it's good. Length has no real relevance on that score.
I do see the OP's point about unfinished stuff though - that is a bit annoying.

The longest fic I've written is ~2200 (not finished yet) and that's taken me three months just to get that far. Even if you take all my drabbles together it's only ~2600 (since the end of September). I did manage about 1200 in a couple hours on a plane once (handwritten, even), but that's unusual and was fueled by boredom. ^_-

It is. It's easy for me to say (sour grapes!) since I lack the ability to do it in the first place, but it's a good idea to have some concept of where you want the story to end up. Otherwise, it seems you stand a good chance of wandering around in the woods a lot. But then, the couple WIPs I have bookmarked that I'm most frustrated about their authors apparently abandoning were never that epic in the first place, they were just good. So yeah, 'owt if it's good kind of sums it up.
